バーバリー.com Burberry

Burberry is now using their Japanese IDN for a redirect to their homepage.

www.バーバリー.com

Not that big of news but it shows that some bigger companies are using IDNs to direct users to their sites.

Japanese Overture
112,633 for バーバリー

Actually this is a massive deal. This is not just some local Japanese company who has been badgered into pointing an IDN at its own site. This is Corporate America waking up to the idea that to get Japanese consumer to buy, you first have to get them to your website, even if you are not able to put up any Japanese content. The fact that a domain name in local script is taking presidence over local content is very important!

I thought that this is a British company?

Yes, this is big news.

Interestingly, many other snob appeal brands aren't there yet because they don't own their own domains, since their names are generic and speculators got them first.

Yes, the Whois would appear to confirm it is British.

Domain would appear to have been created recently.

Come on Corporate America, where are you? John Wayne ain't going to win the Battle of the Pacific single handed for you this time around!

Re: バーバリー.com Burberry

The reason is, Burburry is a huge fad in Japan, and the company knows this.

Part of the reason is the British fetish thing, with the school girl uniforms, and all.

Well that's as maybe but somebody probably said the same about Ferrari in the early days!

Re: バーバリー.com Burberry

I'm not saying it is a bad thing. The consumer culture is seriously more advanced in Asia, and leads to a greater turn over and a higher percentage of customers buying "luxury" items.

Re: バーバリー.com Burberry

Burberry tests fashion for shares
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/2063178.stm

An estimated 50% of luxury goods worldwide are sold to the Japanese and about 30% of these are sold to the travelling Japanese - so a fall in travel after 11 September hit sales hard.

Yes, it's this kind of news that needs to be exploited to make the blind ones aware of idn and their immediate commercial potential.

It took them so many years to understand the domain/traffic concept (and not all of them have it right yet); I wouldn't expect them to figure out idns any time soon.

So they have understood the new bit, now they are going to get stuck on a problem that has been around for 5,000 years. No wonder China is taking our jobs!

The school girl uniform thing has been huge in Japan for decades - there are even magazines devoted to it.

Yup, corporate america moves slow. After the gasoline crises in mid seventies, it took the US automakers almost ten years to start making small sized/fuel efficient cars. The Japanese took the auto market by storm.

Yeah, that's awesome. It was a quick fad here with the Britney video but that trend was to little to fast.

Re: バーバリー.com Burberry

As an Englishman Burbery evokes images of gents in bowler hats who tailor at saville row and go on fox hunts of a weekend. Also Burbery coats were a big fashion amongst the country set in the 60s.Reckon they mustve expanded to Japan to find a new 'trendy market'.
Cool about the idn link!
