Dynadot expired domain auction... beware!

Yesterday I bid on and won an auction on Dynadot "expired" domains auction.
No bid deal, 40$ local geo domain. Then I get an email from them saying that

"The expired domain auction order for xn--.com has been cancelled because the original registrant has renewed the domain."

What is the point of doing an auction of expired domains if they can be "unexpired" as soon as anyone shows interest? This was never made clear to say the least. Almost seems designed to make people buy whatever, probably not get it and then get an unwanted "store credit".

Anyone else get this from Dynadot?

Cheers,

p

Re: Dynadot expired domain auction... beware!

The situation is this:

Dynadot still allows the original registrant to renew the domain for normal reg fee even during the time the domain is on expiring domains auction, even after there has been a winner.

This way, the registrant can easily determine if there is any interest in the domain before renewing it. This works out really nicely for the registrant. Just one more reason to keep my domains at dynadot.

There are many tricks in this game. Welcome to the jungle.

Anyone who deliberately uses that sort of tactics is wasting other people's time. Definitely not an honorable thing to do.

If you fail to honor others, you won't be honored by them, at least not sincerely. It's a simple rule of life.

Re: Dynadot expired domain auction... beware!

right or wrong unless the name is in redemption when it cost substantially more to get it back there is always a chance to renew i have waited to the last week of the grace period to renew before not that i care about dynadot auctions im just a big procrastinator domainsite takes names out your account in like 2weeks if not less learned that the hard way

Re: Dynadot expired domain auction... beware!

i dont like it when dynadot only gives you a credit and does not refund the money if the original buyer renews the domain name,

I think a full refund should be given as sometimes there are no other domain names you want to regged as you were only expecting to pay on the auction domain name

I guess they would give a full refund if asked for ?

I think I'd rather have it this way than those registrars that take over your name completely the second it expires, and never give it back.

Re: Dynadot expired domain auction... beware!

if it is up for auction on dynadot's site you most likely forgot about the name and wouldn't have renewed it anyway... face it

Re: Dynadot expired domain auction... beware!

I won one for $65 the other day. Then MJ renewed it

I only look at them sometimes and if I do get something half decent see it as a bonus...Quite a few get renewed after the close but then I have names at Dynadot so I can always use the credit for renewals anyway

Which one was it? I might let you have it for 65... PM me if you want.

Unless, of course, if it's トーキョー.com, becauseトーキョー.net is already up to $66. and we all know that a dot com is worth at least 10 times more than a dot net ;-) Don't we?

Merry Christmas!

Yes, dot net is far more popular here than dot com, but it's a moot point.

With finnish domains, value is not equal to extension popularity. Finns won't buy your domains in any case, especially not from a foreigner. But they have been proven to be UDRP happy. The only deals which are done for finnish domains for for dot fi, and even those are few and far in between.

Of course there have been notable exceptions, i.e. ovi.com (but it was also owned by a finn who sold it to nokia).

Bottom line: if you have finnish domains that don't earn reg-fee in parking, then they are completely worthless because you can't write finnish and you will pay out the ass for someone who can.
