The main thing I picked up from this is that IDN.com seem to be making most of the running in China. Refer to slides 16 and 17. Of course this could just be down to a lack of data. Found it a bit hard to accept that dot RU did not feature in Slide 7.

Reassuring that Verisign is at last starting to wind up its marketing campaign. I guess we can look forward to more of the same over the coming months.

RD are we looking at the same presentation?

No comment about the almost-gold-plated-guarantee of an IDN ".com" extn ?

Interesting presentation. I hate to be the cynic, but I don't really see much new information. The key point I see is in Slide 25 (which is titled "Key Considerations on Open Questions":

Quote:

* Defining relationship between IDN.ASCII & IDN.IDN
- complimentary name spaces vs new name spaces
- any preemptive registration privileges for existing IDN registrants?

Still the same questions and still no concrete answers. At least Verisign is considering the questions.

huh ok.

I thought seeing a slide on introducing an IDN version of ".com" was big news.

We last heard from verisign via a similar presentation almost 5 years ago, and ever since it has been speculated here that they hadn't simply forgotten and moved on.

ok, i'll go be excited by myself :)

Asking some of the right questions in slide 25 can't be underestimated.

Seems like people are finally talking, given the CircleID article yesterday and the Versign preso.

:)

Never doubted it.

Also never really doubted that the two would be linked using DNAMES whether inside the Root or Outside it.

I take this as good news that Verisign is posturing to move on idn.idn. As discussed over the last year regarding timing of idn.com this document once again points up the fact that there is a defacto agreement about timing of the rollout of idn.idn between idn gtlds and idn cctlds.

I would read it if I could but all I get is a tiny window in the top right corner of the screen and the text is too small to read.

Re: Breaking news from Moscow.. IDN presentation from Verisign

this is quite "funny":

-----------
1.The first example means “Cyrillic.NET”
2.The second example means “<heating in Cyrillic>.COM”
3.The third example means “Cyrillic.Cyrillic”
4.The fourth example means ““<heating in Cyrillic>.<company in Cyrillic>”

Although in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan they are known to be available, they are underutilized…”just haven’t caught on”.
Challenges include…
Perceived as limiting the Web site locally or within the country
Not acceptable for business use or appropriate for the “official” company Web site
Difficult to input, less reliable to use
Characters can be confusing (many sound the same in local languages) causing misspelling
-----------------

Well, how the heck could they catch on yet when everyone knows the key issue is that people aren't going to launch major IDN sites when half their potential visitors can't reach the site because they are still using IE6 or worse. That's the confusing part for users, browsers not being up to date, not the "confusing characters".

Its' not rocket science .... and as for being "difficult to enter", well sheesh, Asians are very used to switching languages, if only to (ironically) enter domain names in English, and switch back to their own language.

Dunno, just seems like we have been hearing the same thing from VeriSign for 5 years. How much longer? My son will have to go to college in another 9 years. The clock is ticking down :)

Presumably this was a live presentation.

I would be particularly interested in how they answered this question:

Any preemptive registration privileges for existing IDN registrants?

Is there any way to get a transcript of this?

That slide wasn't a Q&A, they were framed as, questions that need answering

Not sure. Maybe nic.ru have them on their site.
