Re: IDNForums membership growth

As promised I've been trying to spend Donation/Auction money on Advertising.
There's a few good domain resource sites that I bought advertising on.
That the word of mouth & being on DNJournal helps a lot.

Re: IDNForums membership growth

Admin - It's difficult to complain about something that you receive for free, so don't take this out of context.

This forum is still having fits of locking up, if we want to entice more people into the IDN world and onto this forum - then we need to provide a stable platform.

I know you said you were looking at it the other day, and maybe it's not an easy solution - but can i ask on behalf of everyone, that it be given some priority to fix.

thanks

Yes, that represents a compound growth rate of about 34,000% annualised. As prices must be in someway related to demand this all bodes very well indeed!

Re: IDNForums membership growth

It is a priority but you guys can't realize how much of my waking day is spent preparing for this week (Software being released here in Japan).
I also have to schedule things on engineers times.
I did try to fix problems myself but yeah I do know I need a new server for IDNF & other new projects.

Can I suggest then that to raise the funds for this new server you lock down part of the forum to paying members only.

This would need to be done in such a way that new idn-ers are not put off, and that they can find enough info in the non-membership sections - but at the same time provide value for money to the paying members.

I'm sure you have considered this already.

Yes, ties in with my earlier proposals of only letting paid members start sales threads.

We should, however, avoid the DNF scenario where you have to pay to view sales threads. How many customers will pay to go into a store?

I think it's not a good idea to start charging for all sales so early. It will only drive away sellers to other forums - IDNF has competitors if you know what i mean.

At this point I think the infrastructure matters. The machine hosting IDNF has 46 other sites on it. I assume some of them are high-traffic db driven, because the MySQL writes are extremely slow.

Let's take up a collection then so the forum can be moved to it's own machine.

Re: IDNForums membership growth

Is it hosted on your own dedicated server Craig, or are you sharing it with other users?

Often, a server move isn't really required. This board softwawre is very DB intensive and often all that you need to do is put more RAM in the server. Most dedicated servers are sold with minimal RAM installed and it forces lots of caching to the HDD.

To give you an idea, I always have at LEAST 1Gb RAM in dedicated servers I rent, and the last one I ordered, I negotiated an extra 1Gb to be installed for free as part of the initial deal.

I have no problem donating towards a RAM upgrade and I'm pretty sure others will feel the same.

And since you're SEO focused, I must say that SE robots give high scores for fast page response times. :^)

Re: IDNForums membership growth

OK guys yes I know. I know... I know...
The server the site is on is mine...
All the sites there I have a connection with.
I will get a new server....
I am pitching for a bigger Japanese site to be developed & will need a dedicated server but I need to know the right configuration I need.
That's what I'm waiting for.

SEO is actually my career. I'm in the middle of a really huge project & realize what I need to do. I just have to finish first this week before I can write up specs for the new project.

Re: IDNForums membership growth

If you want this site to succeed, don't do everything yourself. No one can handle all the work of a large and successful site by himself... yet, unless you are the first one :-).

If you need help, get it! If you need to collect money, do it! We're ready.

I am no good for anything, except predicting the future....

This world only needs ONE successful IDN forum, either it's this one OR....

Better be hurried!

Yes, and the growth rate has just surged to 5%/day, which would be which compounded would be an annualised rate of 5 Billion %

Re: IDNForums membership growth

I suggest Olney to set 3 types of membership, Free Member, Regular Member at very low fee, Premium member at higher fee.

At this stage, we don't have to put limits on Free Members, let everybody come and join. Premium Members will enjoy more priviledge 2 years later, for now they are just good buddy supporters.

Any one that has not made money from IDN yet, better remain a Free Member. Those that already made some money like the Duck are free to show their SUPPORT.

My 2 cents :-)

Re: IDNForums membership growth

Craig,

The forum is currently running on a dedicated server assigned only to you?

If so, ask them how much to max out the RAM. Tell us the amount and a few of us will Paypal the figure to you and you can get it done. Page response times will probably drop right done instantly and it's bugger-all work to do it.
