how would IDN variants be handled?

Verisign's comments to the IRT:
No if and when, just how.

http://forum.icann.org/lists/irtp-dr.../msg00044.html
MAJOR BENEFITS OF THE IP CLEARINGHOUSE (p.4 of 14)

“For new gTLD Registry Operators:

The IP Clearinghouse will enable them to design and operate effective Pre‐Launch RPMs that are appropriate for and tailored to their target markets without significant investment in validating data.
The IP Clearinghouse will reduce registry liability.
The IP Clearinghouse can support ASCII and IDN registry operators as it can hold validated data in any script.” Regarding the second bullet point:

Should this say ‘reduce liability for sunrise/landrush processes’?
How will ICANN create a method for registrars and registries to utilize their existing financial structures within the ICANN contracts and new contracts to facilitate the payment of these processes and the creation of these systems?
How will ICANN allocate budget for this purpose.

Regarding the third bullet, how would IDN variants be handled?

Also, Several companies asked to give priority to IDN , AT&T i.e:

F.
Prioritization of Remaining RPM Proposals
The IRT “briefly” identified eleven proposals that warrant further consideration than was provided in the Preliminary Report. With respect to these, AT&T recommends prioritizing: (1) phased implementation; (2) the creation of a special status in the application process for “.brand” type TLDs; and (3) priority of IDN equivalent to holders of 2d level domain names existing gTLDs.

Re: how would IDN variants be handled?

thanks for posting this.

GoDaddy......no major objections...largest registrar on the planet.
demand media...owner of ENOM...2nd largest registrar......no major objections.

EBAY.....no major issues....
ATT ....no major show stoppers. They want IDN second levels quickly...
they have a complete view of global traffic ...email /sms/ web / mobile web...

And .........
Verisign....no major issues.....mostly on WHOIS retention...
the dog that did not bark.........second level tack on fees for additional automated WHOIS in other languages......

Also...lots of points to make sure lawyers don't come after them for multilanguage Thick Whois errors...

Seems pretty likely dot EBAY and dot ATT is a done deal.

ATT wants to make sure no one attempts to get ATT with an umlaut or a cyrillic 'A' or whatever........

Even all the lawyer and arbitrator comments are mild.
URSS vs. UDRP .....the lawyers will still win...(grin)

All the new GTLD or existing ccTLD registrars seemed very mild with their comments also.....

wow....verisign, godaddy, enom, ebay,ATT, and every variation of of IP lawyers with no bombshells, brickbats, or temper tantrums....

IDN cctld's and IDN dot com.......one big bang ...for everything being IDN.IDN worldwide all at once..... because Versign and ATT have had the root servers prepped all along since the test dot test testbed.

They have known all along that the browsers were going to do the heavy lifting, by caching or going to national/regional look up tables for the last 10 years......

I am shocked.....(grin)

Microsoft's and other browser firms comments being absent in the ICANN thread proves the point.

Their bullshit lagging is over now. Overtaken by events and mobile usage exploding...

ICANN never ever had leverage to make Microsoft or any ISP push configurability out to the browser...cached, as add-on, or extension...
