Again, domains are not just for type-in, SEO will work equally well for .coms.
Any ccTLD that is going to delay the roll out of IDN stands to be hit very hard. That might include dot ru, but who really nows what the Russians will do?

With Arabic, ccTLD provide a local solution, whilst gTLD IDN provide a regional solution, so they are not in direct competition. I think the ccTLDs stand to loose out substantially to dot com in Arabic.

Where scripts are language specific such as with Japanese, the ccTLD is largely redundant apart for Nationalist reasons. This may hold sway in some places, but I am not sure that should be the primary motivation for choicing an extension.

Re: Looking for good $5k Russian name

I agree. $5K should get you one of the top Russian domains. It's just my feeling that most of the top Russian domains are in the hands of very few holders who can probably speak pretty good Russian. I am sure some of them are thinking about transforming themselves from holders to end-users, so, the value of that top Russian domain is probably higher to them than to a speculator. But the Russian domain market is not as "regged" as Chinese or Japanese. There are still a bunch of them left. So, even that Russian speaking holder of a top domain might do a trade - give up 1 top domain and reg >700 ($5k/6.99).

In any case, you should end up with a great Russian domain for that money in today's market - don't give up.

.gr supports idn; a few months ago when I was home I heard a commercial on the radio from a company announcing their IDN.gr Needless to say, I freaked out Actually, that's what peaked my interest in idn and got me involved.

Problem with cctlds is they tend to be more expensive, hard to transfer (for resale purposes), various governmental controls, etc.

In idn.gr you can't reg placenames, potentially offensive terms, etc. What's your alternative?:
People will eventually go with .com overall imho.

Exactly what I was hinting at earlier. The way I look at it, since I can easily transform any Russian domain into a site, which I can't do so well in other languages, I'm more likely to sell the languages I can't work with first, and hold all Russian domains.

I've even gotten calls from Russia from consultants to major "end users" but turned them down.
