Israeli press on IDN's
There are the 2 main economical papers in israel.
www.Calcalist.co.il and www.Globes.co.il
Today on Calcalist there's this story: http://www.calcalist.co.il/internet/...315604,00.html
Some guy regged i.e PrimeMinister .com , Treasury .com etc
As they always do in the press, they make it sound like: some group is taking over strategic hebrew domains etc etc...bottom line:

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
That Iraqi company started registering Hebrew names 2 years ago… It would be funny if they don’t have any Arabic domains in their portfolio.

They write to write, who cares.
But it's nice to see that press is starting to take notice.

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
Israel's cctld is .co.il , in Hebrew it will be 10 characters.
סיאו.אייאל
No option with that one clearly.

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
We will never see idn of .co.il
They made it clear by asking to be included in the fast track for .ישראל which is too long for a cc.

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
Personally, I think they should go with קו.יל. but what do I know.
But if they stick with ישראל. then .com will have even more of an advantage (providing Verisign aliases to קום.)

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
קו.יל sounds like ko.yell , not even similar to .co.il , i don't think anyone will ever propose to apply for that one and if someone will it is barely worth mentioning imo.

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
I don't think ICANN will waive the two character ccTLD rule in this case though.

How do Israelis pronounce .co.il? Do they say "dot see ohh dot eye ell" or do they say "dot ko dot eye ell"?

You mean for the 3-character gTLD requirement? That's a good question. Maybe Verisign will go with רשת.
Although I think נט. sounds better.

נט would be much better then רשת definately.
רשת opens a diffrent question though,
Since it also means net (as in fishing net etc)... do you think verisign wont be limited to whatever sounds the same? רשת does mean network in Hebrew but not only and sounds nothing like net נט.
רשת in english sounds like reshet.

Maybe ICANN will make an exception since vowels are not shown in Hebrew and you don't necessarily need three characters to transliterate the word "net". This all seems to point to .com being the clear winner.

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
Different circumstances but same outcome as with Russia (ru = ру )
If either .ru or .co.il would happen in the native language they would undoubtedly be the leading tld for the country but what can you do, they wont happen which yes, surely shows the only serious contender to lead.
Any unusual traffic from israel today?

Re: Israeli press on IDN's
No unusual traffic. Inquiries are definitely on the rise the past two weeks.
