Post The Internet today

Tomorrow's web will probably be dominated by a mixture of the English, Mandarin, Hindi, Portuguese and Russian languages.

It will certainly take a few people a lot of time to get the message but it is happening in the here and now.

Re: The Internet today

The stats are leaving a lot out... Eastern Europe and Russia are not included, as well as Southeast asia, which are good markets in themselves.

Also, consider the value of German Domains at this point in time. Do we dare to compare it with what will be the value of Chinese IDNs in the next year or so?

Re: The Internet today

Lack of Spanish from Latin America is a serious error.

Lack of Indonesia/ Vietnam/ Japan/Korea / means the lack of 600 million .

And the lack of French in Africa is egregious,
Again...with English/Spanish/Portuguese there...and mobile access...
is missing 500 million...

let alone all of Africa....
for Arabic in the North ..plus the M.E.....

Writing off 1.5 billion people seems odd...........

but the plug for Hindi and Portuguese is rather refreshing and unique....
but still mis-balanced....

Domains are only worth something when users recognize their value. In the case of IDN, lack or recognition is generally down to lack of exposure.

And how do you think it is going to change? It has been more than 8 years and even 0.0001% of 75m portuguese internet users don't care about it. Only 75 local buyers would be enough to give it a start.

Do we have any portuguese speaking members here other than jose?

They are totally worth a dime. Anyone with portuguese IDN .com - I'll buy ten prime keywords for a $1! Anywhere, anytime. Just PM me.:p

Can't we say the same for almost all markets except North America?

GDP per capita in Portugal is not bad at all and Brazil seems to be the 9th largest economy in the world.

Re: The Internet today

Hello, I am on holidays this month, and pop up here once in a while and couldn't miss saying something about this.

There are two issues here, as I see it. First, brazilians think there is no such thing as portuguesekeyword.com, they think "the portuguese internet" is made of sites on .com.br.

Secondly and most import, the Portuguese .pt domains are not liberalized. Further info here: http://www.idnforums.com/forums/1403...uguese-pm.html

Cheers, Jose.

"per Capita". Useless stat when looking at potential traffic levels to a domain name. Think Luxembourg or Lichtenstein.

9th largest economy in the world with 99% of that economy concentrated into .com.br translates to "table scraps" for Portuguese [IDN].com's.

Come on, we're talking about a country with 7.5m internet users.

Globo is one of the biggest media company in Brazil and globo.com.br redirects to globo.com. Also, there are many .com sites in the Alexa list .

If you look at the top 40 and take out all the international sites [ yahoo, facebook, rapidshare etc. ] all the true Brasilian sites use com.br, besides Globo.

Re: The Internet today

But that still shows that they are very familiar with .com domains.

Look at these rankings:
1. google.com.br
2. orkut.com.br
3. google.com
19. orkut.com

Re: The Internet today

Of course they are. Just like just about every other culture out there.
The point is that when they're looking for Portuguese content they'll use the com br.

Much like the Brits using co uk when they're looking to buy stuff. They know it's local and it serves their needs. And, there' no language barrier [well, almost] here, as Brasilians with English.
