Re: China Forecasts Spread of Chinese Domain Names

"Within two years, the agency (CNNIC) expects all mainstream Web sites in the country will have domain names that end in the two Chinese characters for "China," rather than the .cn top-level domain. It also expects those domain names to become the most widely visited by Chinese Internet users."

Too optimistic. Maybe they got a plan.

I am not sure they need to be anymore optimistic about that this than JFK was about putting a man on the Moon. If you have the resources, you can make things happen. They can easily force this if that is their will.

Great to see in a mainstream online magazine. This one is a no-brainer.

Re: China Forecasts Spread of Chinese Domain Names

The govt. owns the majority shares of China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom.

With mobile 3G and mobile websites...and mobile browser s/w preconfigured for
IDN.IDN and IDN.com at root zones within China.

....It is such a joke in a way for any magazine not in Chinese to judge how Chinese will or will not be used...but it is important for IT staff worldwide to understand when the log files start jumping with XN-- domains...

The govt is the institution that came up with simplified characters in the first place after 1949.
It changed China.
Literacy in rural China exploded.

The collapse of meaningless dot CN's ...lucky numbers, LLLL's, typo's, and TM squatting has 12 to 15 months of running its course.

Soon the IDN.cn registration price has to be cut...to drive CNNIC revenue.
That will be a key milestone...

Steve

In China there is a very famous Canadian called Mark Rowswell. His Chinese name is 大山 which means great or large mountain. His Mandarin is very very good. My Mandarin is not so good so I gave myself the name 小山 which means little mountain :-) As my Mandarin improves I aspire to be 巨山, which means gigantic mountain :-)

Interesting, I have that in Dot Com, but I only have it down as a Surname after a place in Japan.

Re: China Forecasts Spread of Chinese Domain Names

Mark Roswell is probably the most famous Westerner on Chinese TV, that is not a movie star.

He speaks Mandarin, from what my friends tell me, so flawlessly.

But most impressively, he is funny with Chinese puns in Chinese, that people are shocked to hear him come up with them.

In many ways, he is kind of an Alistair Cooke for the Chinese.

his PR firm would buy the domain...IMO

http://dashan.com/ is the web address for Mark Rowswell/大山/dàshān. It contains all the various contact details for Mark and his agencies

If Mark were to have an IDN for his website then IDNs would hit the big time in China.
