.mobi 0.3%?! This calls into question the whole survey.

There's a term in statistics for that. something about the result for .mobi being so low that it could actually be anywhere between 0.8 and -0.4%

Re: IDNs reach nearly 10% usage in China

China's mobile user pop. is now at 703 million.

10% IDN usage with IE6 still lingering is surprisingly good ....
with garbage dot net.cn and garbage dot com dot cn ....

dot Com's are in balance with dot CN's for IDN use....
which is very encouraging.....

shows that idn dot idn is a wash in China....and dot com as a brand is the point...as many here have known for years and years...

the dot mobi....who knows ???

It is a user survey, ... and mobi names in the Chinese is also mobile names..
so they may have counted m.xxxxxx.com or mobile.xxxxxxx.com names...
in the manner that they counted xxxxxx.com.cn for ASCII...

m.xxxxxxxxxx.com has been common for mobile web for a long time...
but Chinese use of dot mobi itself would be at a fraction of the 0.3 %...

Re: IDNs reach nearly 10% usage in China

newbie question:

5.7% Chinese IDN – Chinese extensions .公司, .网络, .中国
4.1% Chinese IDN – Other extensions: – 中文.com, 中文.net, etc

what are those different extensions on IDN?

i thought that there were only the chinese IDN versions of .com and .cn like .中国

i'm looking into the chinese market but until now my question was opting for .com or .cn ...

regards,
tonecas

From wiki, not sure if there is any newer information on these.

English transliterative proposals:
.中国 : .cn
.公司 : .com.cn
.网络 : .net.cn

Not much take up for 公司 .网络, quite a lot dropping.

When you buy idn.cn you also get idn.中国 & idn.中國

Yes, if looking at Chinese ccTLDs then i would just stick to .cn. (.中国 & .中國)

Popularity of .com.cn seems to be waning and .net.cn was never that popular.

nice. so the price of a .cn it's not so expensive after all... we get 3 for 1.
for what i see those are the simplified and traditional chinese versions of .CN

on the other end, Verisign will automatically translate .com and .net to their respective language IDNs and they are much cheaper...

ideally on should get both .com and .cn as the IDN.* is ideally for local/country usage so i would think that .cn will get more value.

like IDN.de seems to have more value than IDN.com version (don't know if this in fact true but is what i notice from the sales published).

There are IDN.cn and IDN.com investors, some invest in both. Chinese is a tricky language for non-natives. Don't trust google keywords with Chinese, they switch them around sometimes. Also, if it's political or pornographic in nature, do not reg the .cn. Sometimes only one or the other is available so you only have one choice. As with any language, time will tell which way it goes. Germany does like .de, but we also see .com .net and now .info sales, so business owners are getting more competitive in Germany. We will see this trend emerge in other countries in a timed-release fashion. I really can't say who will emerge after Russia, but if I was forced to guess I would say one of the asian countries will be next grow strongly on the IDN namespace.

yes i notice that. specially when google translate a word (in any language) and only gives one match, without given verbs, nouns, ... i allways check with other tools like babylon. also, i found this great site (i'm trying to learn chinese now :) ): http://www.nciku.com/

Without that particular dictionary IDNForums would never have come into existence.

seriously? so, IDNForums started focusing on the chinese language?

Not exactly but my journey started with the realization that you could cut and paste Unicode characters into a Punycode converter and then subsequently register domains. Not being a linguist, I needed a source dictionary, and this was the first one I came across. IDN resources were pretty thin on the ground back then. Hell, there were only a couple of registrars that would entertain them. Only a couple of years later did I have the argument with Olney on DNForum that led to the launch of this forum.
