Two-Word domain names ....

I'm just wondering what your views are with regards to two-word domain names when the .com version has already been taken.

Would you ....

1) - Register the .net version ( or other extension )

or

2) - Would you register the .com version but with the hyphen in between the two words.

I know that for some languages ( German for example ), the hyphen is actually prefered to seperate two or more words. However, what about for other languages such as Japanese, Chinese, Russian etc ?? Does the hyphen hurt the domain or are they acceptable ??

I guess for type in traffic - the hyphen will definately hurt, but what about for a domain you want to develope ?? Would you prefer the .net over the .com with hyphen ??

What are your views on two-word domain names in this scenario and in general ??

Thanks for reading.

Alex

Yes, I guess that can really be a third option.

However, say you have searched for a similar word - in fact - the two-word domain is actually a two-word one because as a single word, they have been taken - then what would you do ?? Still search for an alternative ??

Re: Two-Word domain names ....

I personally would take the hyphenated version. Not sure about Japanese or Chinese, but for Russian, for sure.

Latin and Cyrillic I think I would take the Hyphen. Outside those two perhaps Hindi.

Re: Two-Word domain names ....

I will present you with a reverse case as food for thought.

I have a two word domain which is supposed to be spelled with a dash, I mean in normal writing the dash is grammatically correct. The version with the dash was taken, but the version without the dash was available so I took it. It turns out that an acquaintance of mine owns the dashed version. It also turns out that mine gets far more type-in traffic than his does. Mine gets about 25 type-ins per day and his gets about 5 type-ins per day. Go figure.

As far as development and search traffic goes, it probably doesn't matter.

Re: Two-Word domain names ....

My opinion....

Arabic ...definitely with a hyphen....forced combinations are often gibberish
German ..definitely hyphen

Hindi ...definitely hyphen ........Google search results bear this out as well.
Russian...definitely hyphen.... if Verisign goes with 'network' for dot net in Russian....then let the vodka flow liberally....but doubtful....

French/Spanish/Italian/ Portuguese.... hyphens might help in SEO....

many URL's have folders or file names with hyphens in those 4 languages in my web surfing.....

direct navigation for PPC is dying...

hyphens in ASCII are underrated....

hotel-reservations.com for $200K shows that an SEO guy talked to the CFO and CEO on that puppy....

hyphenated terms make the LLL and LLLL crowd look silly...

totally brandable and protectable as IP ...

Re: Two-Word domain names ....

Hyphens do nothing for SEO unless Google can't parse the keywords without them .... its a "better safe than sorry" technique. Nothing wrong with it, but for most terms in most languages, they are absolutely unnecessary.
