Video Web site Youku.com: “We think it would be nice to have, but not necessary, as most users know us by Youku.com. Also, since Youku is the direct Pinyin of our Chinese name, most users can find us already … Youku.com in Chinese characters was previously registered, but not by us, unfortunately.” Still, “we plan to purchase it from the current owner if at a reasonable price. Otherwise, we would wait for it to be available to register this domain.”

What a load of garbage, as soon as these guys realise just how much traffic is bleeding to the idn then the panic will set in. It's amazing how even many of the Chinese have not yet got it.

That will happen- not!

Morons, even if the argument were true, you might expect these experts to know that there is no chance a squatter is going to just drop it in the immediate future, and that they would in any case be entitled to claim it under UDRP. These people live under a rock, and have rocks for brains.

Re: WSJ china punts on Pinyin.com sites ....

Martin said "Not imminent in the sense that no one but Chinese or people already familiar with kanji would be able to access the websites. Companies want their websites to be visited by as many people as possible, Chinese or not."

I just love the stupidity displayed by these people.

If a Chinese company wants English visitors to their website they do a version in English at an English domain name. If they want Arabic visitors, they'll do an Arabic version and get best results if that site is on an Arabic script domain.

Re: WSJ china punts on Pinyin.com sites ....

You can expect many high traffic websites world-over to be slow on the uptake. Rebranding can be an expensive, complicated, risky business.

Don't expect the high-traffic sites to be the first-movers. Most will only shift when forced to ...... expect the initial momentum from sites with more to gain and less to lose.

And also, if they've messed up by not grabbing "their" domain in their language ....... they aren't likely to advertise the fact in an interview - nobody wants to look stupid!
