Are registries cyber squatters??

The whole auctioning system of the Russian .рф got me thinking.

The complaint in general is that domainers are cyber squatters because they buy more than one name in order to take advantage of the opportunity and then either sell it or develop it or monetize on it.

In what way are registries any different??
By them saving prime domain names and auctioning them to the highest bidder they are doing the same thing!!
They are also taking advantage on the opportunity to make much more money and sell to only those that have lots of money. Enough of the hypocrisy. They pretend to auction in order to save the names from us but they are doing the same thing, though in a different way.

Is there any legal claim that one can through at them?? Meaning if they claim that you are a cyber squatter can you claim the same legally about them??

Food for thought(??)

They are simply taking your ability to turn a quick buck away from you and instead using it for themselves.

Ever heard of the golden rule? He who has the gold makes the rules.

ccTLD's are a law unto themselves, as they are sovereign.

So you're barking up the wrong tree.

The gTLD's auctioning off names - that's a whole different story. But since Registrants aren't recognised by ICANN, we can't do anything about it.

I had problems with this also. All I see coming from the Russian auction are the rich getting the best names and the average Russian jack-squat.

But on the other side of the coin. For 8 weeks straight while this auction is going on. Russian domains and sales will flood DNjournal. It'll be kind of hard for the rest of the domaining community not to notice. It'll also be a godsend for .com and .net owners.

Re: Are registries cyber squatters??

The Russian IDN auction underway is fascinating from many angles..

first....Govt. official pronouncements and interviews at high levels.
- national pride.
- use for e-government ....service innovation

- TV and tech media coverage

- transparency of the sales....at significant values...

so I concur with Gary/Alpha's blog thesis.......it makes the dot com IDN's more
appropriate for short term ROI and development.

RU shift to RF/po branding is going to take time....

dot com to dot KOM will be seamless, since it was IDN to begin with .

But there will be a backlash on this auction on Russian bbs'.

Not knowing what will be left.......and not knowing if the aftermarket in the second half of 2010 will be balanced.
