Update on Icann's Blog.

The first four IDN ccTLD requests has just been announced as having completed the String Evaulation portion of the Fast Track Process.
These are associated with: Egypt, the Russian Federation, United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

See the full announcement here: http://icann.org/en/announcements/an...21jan10-en.htm

So what does that mean?

It means that these may now initiate the String Delegation process, which is the last step before the strings are actually in the DNS root zone and hence available for use.

The remaining 12 requests are still being processed and at ICANN we are very much looking forward to completing more requests as well as receiving additional new requests http://blog.icann.org/wp-includes/im...icon_smile.gif

Overall, the Fast Track Process has three main steps:
1) Preparation (by the requester in the country / territory). Community consensus is built for which IDN ccTLD to apply for, how it is run, and which organization will be running it, along with preparing and gathering all the required supporting documentation.

2) String Evaluation: incoming requests to ICANN in accordance with the criteria described above: the technical and linguistic requirements for the IDN ccTLD string(s). Applications are received through an online system available together with additional material supporting the process at http://www.icann.org/en/topics/idn/fast-track/

3) String Delegation: requests successfully meeting string evaluation criteria are eligible to apply for delegation following the same ICANN IANA process as is used for ASCII based ccTLDs. String delegation requests are submitted to IANA root zone management.

All cleaned up now!

So there were 16 initial requests received. That's pretty close to the 15 I predicted in http://www.idnforums.com/forums/144169-post13.html

Do they need to get the 4 delegation requests approved by the board before they send them off to IANA?

Board had a Special Meeting a few days ago, and has another in February I believe.

The real question is: How long will this final step take before they are live?

Anyone recall how long it took them to put the IDN test zones in the root after ICANN asked them to do so?

Note how the NYTimes doesn't print the actual "foreign" characters at all .... probably because they are still doing:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

How very "Sedo" of them. Didn't realize how fashionable the 90s still is ....

Even if they were capable of printing the characters most of their viewers wouldn't be able to see them without the extra language packs loaded.

They would have to display pictures of the words for it to work with their audience.

Yeah, agreed. I think its a "crime" that Windows doesn't install many more fonts as default. All this "language pack" rubbish from M$oft is yet another of their "1 step forward, 5 steps backwards" marketing "initiiatves"....

Just without seeing the actual characters in articles, the whole thing sort of loses its impact .....

The New York Times staff haven't installed IDN keyboards yet.

I agree and I think ICANN can do a bit better with their press releases. The last article got most of their information from this press release I assume:
http://icann.org/en/news/releases/re...21jan10-en.pdf

Notice anything missing? They don't even tell you what the 4 names that were approved were! The most important piece of information is missing. It is a PDF file as well so there is no excuse. Unicode in a PDF will display fine on anyones computer since everything that is required to render it is included in the PDF.

It would have been simple to do a screen capture of the PDF to make a graphic of the names for the online article. (or ICANN could include one)

Also, Why isn't Tina mentioned in the press release? I would think she would be the person to respond to any questions on the matter.

Might want to check your Hosting setup. Your link didn't work for me without the www.

so http://www.idnbusiness.com should work.
