Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

I have a domain, 77k.com (shamefully it is not an IDN) That is suddenly getting a pile of traffic from China. 150-200 hits per day. It is parked and it doesn't convert well. 77k.org is a porn site but I have learned that 77kk.com/net/org are all different Chinese games sites.

Anyone have any idea how I can monetize this traffic better?

Re: Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

Haha!

I think almost all the traffic is looking for games. The porn site is in English and all this traffic is coming from China. It didn't make any sense until I found out about the 77kk domains.

I'm now wondering what it takes for a foreign person to get a permit so the Chinese firewall doesn't clamp down if I build it out into a real site.

Re: Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

The plot thickens. The 77kk.com site appears to be a free movie/free TV site but they also have a games site. Most of the searches that have been done have been looking for games.

There is also a Chinese site at 77kkk.com! What is it with the 7's and the K's?

Re: Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

Sorry for the off topic.

It seems that ND is no longer blocked in China. I recently noticed that my Chinese domains had a sudden increase of visits from China.

Traffic to 77k may have been there for a long time.

No worries on the topic. It would seem that it has. I hope this is not just some short term glitch in the firewall.

Not much change for my idn traffic, all parked at namedrive.
Can anyone verify they are seeing namedrive pages inside China.

I think the main site that you are getting traffic from is actually 7k7k.com, a very popular flash games site. (7k has no real meaning as far as i am aware..)

To develop a site you shouldn't have too much trouble with the Chinese GFW. No need for a permit. As long as the host is not already blocked and you have no pornographic content on the site you should have no problem with your website being accessible.

I was in China few months ago, Beijing, Zhejing, Sichuan etc. I occassionally tried visiting my parked names but found they were not accessible.

I understand that the block was at isp level. It is possible that more isps are now lifting the blockages. Quite a few of my names showed daily vists and clicks for the first time from China. The trends is quite obvious with my domains.

Haven't made too much of a habit to check parked pages while in other places in China but are right that the firewall differs with ISP/region.

From my experience in Guangdong, namedrive and dynadot parked pages have been accessible for quite a while now. Sedo parked pages still load up a white/blank screen.

You can build an autopilot flash games sites with Wordpress and Mochiads. I think Mochiads allow Chinese traffic.

Re: Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

I did something like that. It still gets a couple hundred hits a day but it doesn't convert well. Mochi is a great for content but it doesn't pay. In fact I don't even know why they bother suggesting you can make any money with them. They have served 10's of thousands of games to my site and I think I have made a whole 7 cents with them.

Sounds like just another rip-off.

Mochi is not exactly a rip-off.

They provide portal owners with free content [a plethora of games] and they show in-line game ads and they pay per impression.

Their rates are really low [considering the fact that game traffic is traditionally one of the worst converting types of traffic], even more so for Chinese traffic, as in Clotho's case. Also, a big chunk of the lowly impression ad revenue goes to the game developer and some to Mochi, of course.

Big portal owners with millions of impressions stand to make some money with them, but, in reality, Mochi shouldn't be [and isn't] a portal's main income source.

@ Clotho

I visited your site and I see that you're not taking advantage of advertising opportunities within your site. You could place more adsense ads in areas where they would be clicked more.

Even the Joomla plug-in you are using has a 728x90 ad right on top of each game on their demo page, but you're not.

Mochi is making a move in China right now trying to procure better advertising contracts, but, as I mentioned above, your focus on income should be elsewhere.

Besides, you should be looking into trying to make the site 'sticky' and grow your traffic.

Re: Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

Thank you very much for the review Yanni! rep added

I agree that Mochi is a great tool for content but the revenue part of it is pretty darn poor. I am glad to hear that they are working on improving their advertising contracts in China.

As for making the site more sticky, I agree with you on this. In fact part of the reason I hadn't plastered adds everyplace possible was to keep the site loading fast and to try to make it more attractive to the native users (thus improving the sticky factor). I figured I could optimize the advertising further once I got the eyeballs sorted out.

The biggest problem I came across was that most of the users are still using IE6 and the Joomla/Mochi interface I have just doesn't render well in that antiquated browser. I haven't found a good solution for this yet so I haven't progressed any further. I have been adding games from time to time. There is a pretty substantial library there now. I noticed that Mochi has been making more games available in Chinese so I have been putting as many of those up as I can find. This has improved the stickiness somewhat.

Thanks again for your comments!

Re: Sudden abundance of Chinese traffic

Clotho,

I don't know how the Joomla/Mochi plug-in works, but if it allows you to just pull games directly from Mochi instead of downloading it on your server, you would have less worries about server overload.
You won't get the Mochi revenue this way, but, like you said, it's peanuts anyway...

I wasn't aware of the IE6 problem that you mention.

You could also add some type of social bookmarking feature to make it easier for people to come back and share your site with others. Something like addthis [.] com ; don't know of any catering to the Chinese audience.

Also, you could try adding a comment form under the games to have people interact thus giving them a reason to come back.
I'm not familiar with Joomla, but if there is a way to change the permalink structure to a more search engine-friendly format, it should help a bit in that area.

Regarding ads.

Placing a 728x90 banner right above or even right below the game container, won't be that obtrusive, but you'll definitely see some action occurring in your adsense earnings.

On my game sites I have made all the games width at 728 [most games are resizable] so the ad below or above seems like it's part of the game, and besides, it's always there in plain view during play time. More chances to get clicked.

As for Mochi, I believe some of their staff is from China and they now offer free translations to Chinese to all the game developers, so you'll be seeing more and more Chinese versions of games.

I just wish they'd do Chinese to English, as there are some great Chinese games on their system that would have great appeal to the non-Chinese players.

Good Luck with the site.
