both domains sold at afternic.com

a bit old news, but still worth posting.

yes, もしもし is hello, mainly used when answering the phone

and 英文 is for English Literature as stated by "alpha"

I don't think $3,188 is so much for a generic domain like もしもし.
it has a tremendous branding potential and it is already used by so many commercial companies in Japan.

and then, a domain name is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it

Does moshi moshi ring any bells? We have talked about it here before.

A quick search reveals a moshi moshi restaurants (moshimoshi.co.uk) and a moshi moshi records (moshimoshimusic.com), so if the Romaji kludge has that much branding potential in the UK I think it is safe to presume that the original Japanese in .com was well worth the selling price.

Consider the mindshare associated with that term. 127million people hear it every time the phone rings...

I can understand moshimoshi sold for $3,188.

What I can't comprehend is the price for English Sentences dot jp.

Perhaps the buyer confused 英文 with 英語.

Maybe the buyer thought 英文 has the same meaning in Chinese and Japanese.
In Chinese, 英文 means the English Language, the secondary term to 英语.

Old thread that I never saw about a couple of my purchases. I knew that
英文 wasn't eigo (English), but purchased it due to crappy data from my favourite software program. 英文 is English in Chinese and I think this caused my software program to give me corrupt data. In retrospect, I should have known the numbers were wrong as Market Samurai gave me a Search Engine Optimization Value (SEOV) almost as high as that of 英語 (Eigo). That doesn't pass the sniff test but I failed to notice that. That was a disappointment as that program rarely fails me. As for MoshiMoshi, I thought it might be one of the best brandables in the Japanese language but I guess only time will tell.

Good point. Generally, I'm not. Kind of an impulse purchase on that one.

Re: もしもし . com & 英文 . jp

I see.
The reason I was asking is because there is about 50 trademarks for, or containing, "もしもし"
and,
if I recall correctly, Edwin posted some time ago about the ease with which a Japanese corporation can take away a domain name that is essentially a term for which they have a TM.
