网际 - internet?

网际 - this seems to be a form of 'internet' but I'm not sure because of the context in which it's usually presented. It appears on the first page of results with the English word 'Flash'.

Can anyone provide a more definitive translation?

I have the .cn.

I think that's a Taiwan or Hong Kong version - full name is 网际网络. 互联网 should be more common in China.

Hi Gamma, 网际 is a premium name. If you want to drop it, send it to me and I say thank you. :-)

网际 is the exact translation of "internet" in Chinese, its primary fuction is an adjective, but due to its distint meaning it's often used as a noun. One way to understand how good this name is or how this name is used you just compare it to "国际" "international". 网际 is Inter-Net or Inter-Nets. 国际 is Inter-Nation or Inter-Nations.

Re: 网际 - internet?

Thanks Giant for the comprehensive explanation. For some reason DS doesn't allow me to change nameservers to Chinese nameservers, so there is no way for me to gauge traffic for any .cn.

I just noticed that 互联网.com passes the US ovt smell-test with flying colors. Somehow I think this is the most popular term for internet in China. Very nice name!

Don't expect much traffic on 网际 because there is no reason why people would search for it at this time. This name is good for brand, representing products or services for internet.

I don't see much traffic on 互联网.com either.

Well, US OVT is only 144. Most names with that range get only 1-3 views a day. There are exceptional ones with 10, 20 or more views a day though.

Yes, i encounter the problem of changing nameservers for .cn names on DS, i can't even unlock the names? ? ?

I emailed to complain on the issue, and the support guy told me he would only unlock for me if i emailed him my password as confirmation!

Google result 20M.

This name is used as Name Modifier, but will stand alone later to represent internet. Investing means to invest in names taht are popular now, and names will be popular later.

Because of the use of internet growing, Chinese words will experience a period of substantial change due to the different ways of naming from different regions. At the end, only the popular ones will prevail and some will be eliminated.

Examples:

物业 (property) This used to be a Cantonese term, but now is adopted as the only Chinese word mean Real Estate Property.

按揭 (mortgage) Also a Cantonese term, used mostly by HK and overseas Chinese. Taiwanese are not familiar with this word, but they will, because China will use this name (no other choice) and the world everywhere will follow.

But the popular word 速递 in Hong Kong could be replaced by 快递 in the future, because [kuai di] is easier pronounced than [su di] in Mandarin. Or 速递 can still survive but will just become less and less popular.

Re: 网际 - internet?

I did a search and find that "网际" is normally used with another word to make it a complete meaning. It hardly used as a singleton noun. Okay let's bet and see if it will become internet "later".

BTW, is it your own prediction? any stats support?

I show 上网 as a potential primary term. Any comments, correction, or clarification
