At last, something crazier than IDNs.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/20...t_12764248.htm

China's richest village to finish its skyscraper in June

BEIJING, Jan. 6 -- Huaxi Village in East China's Jiangsu Province, allegedly the richest village in the country, saw its skyscraper rise to 250 meters on Tuesday, the Yangtze Evening News reports.

The 74-storey skyscraper is expected to reach 328 meters upon completion this June. Costing more than 1.5 billion yuan, the mega-building is scheduled to go into operation in 2011 to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the village.

Now the village is looking to Taiwan for investment and cooperation opportunities.

Wu Renbao, the former village leader who has transformed the sleepy farming community into an industrial hub of Jiangsu Province and a model for industry throughout China, has just visited Taiwan's city of Taichung.

He told the city's mayor, Jason Hu, that Huaxi intends to build a 100-meter gilded pagoda in Taichung.

If viable, the new building will be the tallest of its kind in the world and will feature high-end restaurants on the premises that cater to businesses and tourists.

Mayor Hu has welcomed the proposal and suggested several sites for the pagoda. The construction site has not been decided yet.

(Source: english.cri.cn)

Artist impression of how it will finally look like, including rice fields and fish ponds in the surroundings.

FYI, at 328 meters, it will beat the Shard London Bridge by 18 meters.

I have to say, I am struggling to see the logic behind skyscrapers. The only plausible justification for their existence is to get lots of people in close proximity at minimum cost by saving on expensive inner city land. Surely, putting everything on line and moving to home working destroys the fundamental logic behind skyscrapers. I would have though 9/11 would have made it clear to everyone that this form of development makes no sense.

Yes, its kind of perverse that financial institutions and banks which are suppose to understand the risk reward continuum have invested the most in these white elephants.

The craziest thing I saw in China is a DVD video screen above piss pot. That was in Lijiang, 2 years ago.

Kind of like putting all your eggs in one basket. That's why they're insured I'm sure.

the building just cost 1.5 trillion yuan which converts to $200 million. How much steel will go into such a building? Is there enough steel for it to survive a moderate earthquake?

Re: At last, something crazier than IDNs.

some skyscrapers are built more for advertising than for any kind of pragmatic purpose.

but in china it seems there is another issue--quality control. e.g.:

http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/modules...le&sid=1104437

and that's just from last month, in shanghai.

Yep, that would be the American approach. There is much more to earthquake resistance than brute force. If you are looking for the secrets of Earthquake resistance, then look for them in the ancient Pagodas.

Are there earthquake in England? I read there are.

The Pacific plates are having a quake party, first the big Sumatran quake 2004, Indian ocean (the one that created the Asian tsunami), then north to China Sichuan, 2008, now Chile. All huge, almost record breaking ones.

It's going round the entire Pacific. Everyone in the quake zone, Japan, Taiwan, California ought to be prepared. Check your house. If you live in the skyscraper, learn how to base jump.
