Russian Domains & Opera

I think I was inspired to look into Russian domains because of the long thread from the guy from Russia.

Someone answered a question that I wondered.

Where was the traffic coming from.

Opera browser.

It takes the users to the dot com.
This was really amazing me using my version of Opera & seeing it myself.
I put in a Russian keyword & it went to the IDN domain with the dot com.

Then I read a post on Techcrunch about the new version of Opera 10.5
I downloaded it tried one of the Russian keywords again.

IT WENT TO GOOGLE!!!!!

What's gonna happen? I didn't even get a chance to register one yet.

I've noticed an increase of traffic from google over the last several weeks with my Russian IDNs.

Whatever is going on it is a good thing, so go ahead and take the plunge! Just don't take any of the ones on my reg list please.

*I was attributing the increase in traffic to the google button on the bottom of the Yandex.ru search screen.

ie http://yandex.ru/yandsearch?text=%D0...A%D0%B8+&lr=84

but it may also be because google is giving a little more credence to the IDN domain name url.

When Yandex and Rambler start to do this, well it's going to be interesting to say the least.

Re: Russian Domains & Opera

I just tried 10.10 on the Mac and it added .com to the end.

Is there a setting somewhere in the preferences on the Windows version?

Re: Russian Domains & Opera

It's a bug.

Google already has:

1) the search bar

2) using "g keyword" in the address bar

Now they've temporarily hijacked the whole address bar

Let's hope the version that ultimately gets downloaded via the browser ballot has the bug fixed!

Re: Russian Domains & Opera

It is version 10.5
It's downloadable from the Opera web site.
It didn't update via auto-update I had to download it.
It looks like a permanent feature.
I'm not sure if 10.5 is out for a Mac but this looked like the stable version for Windows.

Others can try.

Re: Russian Domains & Opera

It's not a permanent feature. It's a bug. 10.50 was rushed to release with quite a few bugs still present.

How do you know it is a bug, if they have made a big deal out of this new feature?

Re: Russian Domains & Opera

Short term thinking by someone at Opera. Get paid by Google, but in the end all your customers will be using Chrome.

EPIC FAIL.

I thought you might have supported that, seeing as it is a take off the "workers of the world unite" slogan.

Nevertheless, the fact that you moved away from it, has no bearing on this issue.

Re: Russian Domains & Opera

Stop promoting your facebook fanclub and stay focused. This is an important topic for those that have Russian domains. Not sure if you do.
