Understanding the IDN

Does anyone here know how the IDN rules map to a given language?

i.e.
xn-- (specifies that the domain is an IDN)
xn-- *** (specifies the term is chinese)
etc.

Also, is there a way to understand prior to attempting to register the IDN whether it's restricted? I'm 0/10 right now trying to register IDNs because of the variant restrictions.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Understanding the IDN

Only thing I'm noticing distingushing lately is there are hebrew & Arabic domains with four hyphens being dropped
Instead of xn-- Its more link xn----domain in the punycode...

ICANN have guidlines on variant restrictions. Essentially don't do mixed scripts. They are not worth anything anyway.

There are blocks on upper case characters and there are issues regarding two words Combo's.

The biggest problem area is Simplified and Traditional Chinese and Japanese. All three overlap. There is a block in place to ensure that you cannot register sequences of characters that conform to the exact equivalent in the the Traditional Script/Japanese if the Simplified is already booked and vis-visersa. Initial queries of registration tool or who-is will not tell you this. You can use a dictionary and work it out by character substitution but that is rather tedious. Often just better to try what you want, if it appears to be available, try to book it. If it won't register just assume you have hit the block and move on!

Best Regards
Dave Wrixon

Re: Understanding the IDN

That's a shame but I guess it makes some sense given that variants fall between languages (i.e. some characters are considered both japanese & chinese as Dave mentioned).

Is the documentation published anywhere on the ruleset they use to map the IDNs to characters though?

Happy new year!

Chris

I am pretty sure there is some info still available at Verisign.com and ICANN.org.
