I disagree. I think the turning point will be when companies start to advertise their IDN's.
I am certain this is only a matter of time. IDN's provide significant advantages to the current advertising solutions being used. ie. the search box method or the qr code method.
Companies in Japan have much time and effort dedicated to their current ASCII domains and I feel they will be reluctant to make such a broad sweeping change.
Advertising an IDN that is redirected to their current site solves this problem and provides them with the advantage of a memorable URL for their advertising. It is simply the most efficient way to get users to your site.
In time the rebranding of the site with the IDN won't seem like such a risky change in many cases. It will simply seem to be the most logical choice. The ASCII domain can be redirected to the IDN to ensure that legacy bookmarks etc. are maintained.
