Re: global internet filtering map

I think they got a geek to write their opening para:

----
The ONI collects global data on Internet filtering using technical and contextual tools. Our analysis is based on a fusion of expert (qualitative) and statistical (quantitative) methods, and represents the current state of filtering drawn from ONI's on-going survey work. ONI testing is an ongoing and evolving process. We continue to refine our analytical toolset and document new methods and means by which information on the Internet is shaped and filtered. The categories embedded in our maps are provided as an aid to interpreting results, rather than an absolute measure of how countries filter.
----

not exactly "inviting" stuff.... so what do they actually do?

Re: global internet filtering map

just reading about thailand .....

"Internet users (% of population) 11 "

then 2 paras later:

The total number of Internet users in 2005 was estimated at 12,500,000, representing a PC Internet penetration rate of approximately 19 percent

Oops

"In 2004, about 15 percent of schools had access to the Internet" - wow, who cares about 2004 - its 2010 baby! 6 years is like 3 generations in Internet years....

"It is believed that more people may use the Internet as content becomes available in local languages rather than English"

err ... Thai Net content was always in Thai, not English. This isn't India .... where do they get this "data"?

"Broadband Internet access is available, but it is still undeveloped at less than 2 percent household penetration"

more twaddle, its getting tiring now.

I could go on, but the "report" carries on endlessly and I don't have the will.

This isn't meant as any disrespect to the website, or Chris for letting us know about the website.

But clearly, its just yet another company that is somehow thinking "let's aggregate a large number of largely incorrect reports about each country and pretend therefore to be experts" on the status of the Internet round the world.

Newsflash - if you want an expert on any country, talk to someone that lives there, understands the country, and understands how people use the Internet there.

Real "experts" might actually charge for what they tell you but at least it will resemble something approaching "truth / reality" .... the stuff on these "conglomerate" sites is just so much garbage ... might as well get 100 monkeys to write it .... or maybe they did?

you get what you pay for chris, no such thing as a free lunch. etc

and more to the point, if you read this stuff, you would think Thailand was a hopeless Internet case, with relatively few users, especially who could access via broad-band.

Crock of shit - haven't met anyone using dial-up since it was me 4 years ago
