米国 - is this United States ??

Been going through my renewals and I noticed that I have 米国.biz. From what I can gather, it means US or United States in Japanese.

Can I get any feedback of thoughts on this one ?? Does the .biz extension kill any value it may have ?? I am not a big fan at all of .biz - I probably own no more than 5, so any thoughts on this would be most welcome.

Thanks for your time

Alex

Re: 米国 - is this United States ??

hi

yes it means america - japanese have kanji and katakana names for countries. this one means rice country, which is a bit stupid cos the legend goes that americans told the japanese after the war rice was bad for brains so they should eat imported american wheat!

Have you ever wondered why the United States, known for its potato and bread consumption, is called 米国 (Beikoku, Rice Country) in Japanese? Here's the reason:

当て字 (ateji) "phonetic substitutes" are kanji used phonetically with little or no relation to their meanings. The atejionce assigned to the four syllables of "A-me-ri-ka" were 亜米利加. ("ME" is an old reading for 米; the modern so-called "Chinese readings" for this kanji are "BEI" and "MAI"). 米 has thus come to mean not only "rice," but "America," as well.
If 亜米利加 means A-ME-RI-KA, why wasn't the first character 亜 used in the short form 亜国? Because 亜 is used for the abbreviation for the word ASIA.

Re: 米国 - is this United States ??

It is still more appropriate for an American in Japan, to say that he/she is a
Beikokujin than to say Ameirikajin .

Beikoku is routinely used in newspapers etc for use with US govt expressions, politicians, policies, and travel tours.

Music culture and everything else seems to be katakana 99% of the time.
