Link/No link

In various places (email, forums, blogs) sometimes the idn in this format ( דוגמא.com ) is clickable and sometimes it isn't. What determines that?

TIA

Re: Link/No link

The filter used by the webmasters, forum owners, etc.

For example, on some of my websites, (1) all html tags are stripped from comments and (2) email addresses are automatically turned into "mail to" link. I know some other people configure their comment filter so that web addresses are turned into "no follow" links.

Re: Link/No link

Thanks squirrel,
What's weird is that at times, at the same place (gmail) it sometimes makes the domain דוגמא.com clickable, sometimes it isn't which led me think it also may be browser related?

Re: Link/No link

I'm not sure if it could be browser related. I know browsers may turn punycode links into unicode links, but turning text into links.. not sure

Perhaps it's the gmail application. I do not use gmail so I cannot help you much more than that but I know for a fact that Google Translate turns domain into clickable links every once in a while.

gmail knows shit about what is a domain and what isn't. Sometimes putting an old-style ASCII domain in capitals is enough to make it think it isn't a domain even. Who hope with these new-fangled xn-- thingys?

As for other email clients, web apps, only the mighty knows .... don't expect "consistent IDN performance" across apps for the next 10 years, sorry!

On our sites, we have given up trying to put IDN links in emails, especially if they have unicode URLs as well. We use an ASCII alias or bit.ly link instead. Sad but true.
