Position paper on the introduction of new gTLDs

The constituency thinks that existing sponsored registries should be encouraged to (and have the right to) provide Internationalized Domain Name versions of their TLD strings in non-ASCII characters with the same semantic meaning as their ASCII TLD string.
They should be given first right of refusal for those IDN strings and not treated as a new proposer of a gTLD.

The writing was on the wall 8)

If i understand it correctly, before the GNSO was formed there was this: http://www.dnso.org/

And you can check every one of the four reports and find that in there. all from 2003

Re: Position paper on the introduction of new gTLDs

Guide Book to be approved in September. This will represent an invitation to apply for the name. The application process will be delays for a couple of months or so, to end of 2010 or may be beginning of 2012. Straight forward applications from existing registeries will be processed in three months from then. Verisign and Co have the jump because they will not need to prove their suitability to run a registry.

The high application fee is inspired. It puts Verisign right at the front of the queue, and ICANN will be only too eager to cash their cheques.

What about the underserved communities that now won't get their scripts?

Do you think Verisign will be willing to write a big check for, say, .com in Armenian? Or will they wait for a price break?

I doubt if there is a burning need at this time. Armenia hasn't to my knowledge even applied for its ccTLD.

I doubt they want to confuse ICANN too much at this time and will wait for a price break. Don't think I have more than a couple of these, so personally, I am not right bothered.
