This is typical of the problem that we all face and why many of these domains are still available. The answer is purely down to a lack of browser support and hence a general lack of interest by large corporations. When I say lack of browser support. IE 6.0 has a virtual monopoly in Japan. However, IE 7,0 is now being rolled out in Beta there in a Japanese edition, so the long awaited sea change is about to happen. This will strike like a Tsunami!

what extension? Are they .com / .net? .jp / .cn?
The .com will receive the most traffic at this point.

Re: traffic question....???
yup, that description fits my portfolio. Have patience, if you are in China, you should watch to c how many browsers are idn enabled (firefox, IE7 or plugins), and know
what to expect.

That's average traffic. OVT scores are very misleading, just because there are 200,000 searches a month for a Japanese term doesn't mean that you will get 2000 views.
This is one reason why registering good generics is more important than having high OVT since high OVT doesn't translate into money, at least at the moment.
The bulk of the value will come from the name instead.

Yeah that sums up my strategy.

The browser with the largest market share does not support IDNs yet. Therefore, very little real traffic. That is why we are all waiting for Internet Explorer 7 to officially release and auto-update. Hang on and wait.

A word of caution. Traffic is not going to appear overnight.
1. Not everyone is using XP.
2. People are not going to rush to download IE7.
3. People in Japan are not used to typing in Kanji or Kana, and then adding a .com.

Same for Thailand. The prospects of anyone adding ".com" to a thai language domain are relatively slight. The real traffic will come if and when IDN.IDN happens, as Thais will definitely type ".คอม" i.e. ".com" onto the end of Thai language domains.
Even now, when Thai browsers don't yet understand ".คอม", many Thai sites have already branded themselves as ".คอม".
So until IDN.IDN happens, I cannot see any major traffic increases in Thailand. But if IDN.IDN does happen, traffic to Thai IDNs will skyrocket.
