The thing is, they don't filter out anything at all. They "filter in" i.e. just have a list of "acceptable" sources of information they show results from.

Which is fine, but its not really a search engine, and as a rule, people don't want to use them. You can't force people to wear blinkers.

How about an atheist search engine that filters out religous moralists?

based on the rumored stat that ~30% of all internet use is people searching out porn, then it makes sense to me to have a no ugly filter.

and I don't know whether it's technically feasible (maybe someone can chime in on this one), but if it could filter out small & medium sized boobs too - that would be a great help.

Gary, I am sorry to say that most money is made catering freaks, they simply pay more, perhaps 'freakish porn' filter...yeah that would be good, 'detect-gender:if(sex!==male && sex!==female)BLOCK();'

You only want that filter so you get to dominate the search results ....

Niche engines are interesting, but usually non-starters.
There's just no way to arbitrate relevance without some sort of crowdsourcing dynamic built into your quality filter and since the 'crowd' isn't of a like mind, these things always fail, hard. What you wind up with is an 'ideal' (say, no porn) codified with a loose set of whatever parameters can be quantified in the algo- that winds up culling intense amounts of relevant information and ultimately delivering a low quality product in terms of very skewed serps.

In time, your browsers go back to what works (aka- Google) and just up their filter level.

It's all about performance and these things just don't perform well.

If anyone wants to see a neat example of a new engine, see DuckDuckGo.
