How To Avoid Mistakes

Hi, there was a previous thread on IDNForums.com about all the things you can do to avoid making mistakes. There was one particularly helpful post that listed about 8 different things you should do before buying a domain. Can anyone help? I can't find it. Thanks.

Re: How To Avoid Mistakes

I did a bit of searching and couldn't find it.

No doubt among the talent here we could help "recreate" it :p

Re: How To Avoid Mistakes

My 2 cents...

The obvious indicators:
  • Search volume
  • PPC / ad competition
  • Other extensions (if there are natives owning .org or .biz then the .com should be a good one)
  • If you can't ask a native use "native" online dictionaries like mdbg.net or rustran.com

Apart from that:
  • Search keywords with direct commercial use (products and services) should do better than brandables
  • Look at the market conditions: While China or Japan should be perfect for e-commerce online services (like chat, video or games) might be better in the Arab world
  • Look at the most successful business models: selling used cars works in pretty much any country of the world while free sms websites disappeared everywhere.
  • If all the of the above indicators are positive and you are convinced don't listen to anyone else and buy it.

Even happened to be 8 ... :D

Also worth checking on Google images to see if the images match what you believe to be the domain name itself.

If your gut says a term should have significantly more SERP, then take a much closer look.

Wikipedia doesn't always give the most popular term. For ex. ヨーガ vs ヨガ

Re: How To Avoid Mistakes

I think that was most of the contents of the previous thread. Someone else previously said to check local e-commerce sites to see if a search for the term you are considering brings up results. For example, enter the term in the local E-Bay and Amazon sites to see if there are results.
I would add be careful with lists of available terms as there are likely to be many secondary terms on lists that have already been looked at by others. Probably above all, stick to the aftermarket. Regging available terms is like walking through a field of landmines. Just check out the thread titled "reg of the day" on that other forum for a primer on what not to do and it is good comedy as well.
When doing a search, have a look at the results and see if the term is used alone or always in conjunction with other terms. If it is always with other terms it may not be a standalone term.
I would also do research on the market so you are familiar with what is likely to be available as a fresh reg(probably not much). Also, do research on and be familiar with the language you are working with. Languages like Arabic and Russian have unique characteristics which can cause problems, such as Russian plurals and Arabic two-word terms.
