Re: Japanese language experiment.
fantastic idea for an experiment, and stoked its been done but ... where are the results? You can't do an experiment and just give vague results, its not how it works, especially at a Uni. These are scientists right?
If it said "Researchers found that, on average, people were 3 times more likely to recall a domain name in Japanese than in English" (or whatever), that is exactly what you need. A headline you can broadcast round the world, so people in advertising / branding then say "we are getting 3x more bang for our buck" and would rush to local language domains. Without concrete figures, its not worth much at all.
BTW, if the figures are there, but I have missed them, please let me know

in this case I'd say it doesn't matter.
had it been conducted by some Uni in the U.S or Europe I'd agree.
but the fact it's been done in Tokyo is the point.

Now if someone could translate the major results for everyone here at IDNF, that would be amazing!

Re: Japanese language experiment.
With Arabic counting for more than half of everything, it gets awfully hard to get excited about Japanese.

The point is this is the first ever published experiment actually demonstrating the improved recall value of IDN domains vs ASCII domains. That is very important.
Of course the level of improvement will vary across languages. This experiment really needs repeating for each language.
As for Arabic counting for more than half of everything, that depends on what is in your portfolio

Re: Japanese language experiment.
Thank you everyone for the rep and the comments. Thank you very much Squirrel for finding the original study. I tried to find it but my efforts were fruitless. I was a bit surprised that this was done in 2006 and has only come to light now. I wonder what else is out there that we haven't discovered yet?
RD- I am glad your Arabic names are doing well. I hope you are as pleased with their growth as I am with my Japanese domains.

Clotho now holds the power to banish us all to to the red zone. Don't piss him off.
