The gTLD Boondoggle

Back in 1998, before we all knew that people would find material online using search engines rather than domains, the idea of lots of little .MUSEUM style domains to organize parts of the net sort of seemed plausible. It doesn't any more. Countries that write their names using other than the Roman alphabet wanted TLDs their citizens can read, which the IDN fast track now provides. This doesn't give us the Chinese version of .COM, but I see little reason to think that the users (as opposed to domain salesmen) would prefer it to the Chinese version of .COM.CN which they do have. This leaves us with, "Ma, they promised!" which is about the stupidest reason imaginable to do something.

Re: The gTLD Boondoggle

Why try to argue with this idiot?

He honestly believes the only chinese speaking people in the world live in China. And claims that businesses within non-latin countries only use their ccTLD. Both complete bullshit.

He also seems like a very bitter man.

Edit:

Jeez, how many more days is it until the 20th? It can't get here soon enough.

Re: The gTLD Boondoggle

Well, apart from his slight confusion regarding the urgent need for non-latin variants for the existing gTLD's I think his hit the nail on the head.

Hold it right there. Before 1998, there were even gopher seach engines. If you didn't know that, you probably weren't around looking for stuff online back then.

Re: The gTLD Boondoggle

I remember using Veronica and Jughead search engines in the early 1990s. Back then, only major educational and research institutions and a few IT companies had domains before the internet went public. Many domains were geographical and a lot of subdomains were being used. Typins were going on, but it was a more complex situation than now. Not every company had a domain, and fewer ran gopher servers. Sure gopher.domain.name might work, but it usually was something more complicated than that. People used bookmarks, and yes, search engines, as well as directories and thematical pages of links. Just like they do now.

Also see:

There was also ftp search, which I remember using over email. How is that? Well, you'd send a message with a qwery to archie's email account, and you'd get a reply back with a list of links (ie. search results).
