India: One Country, Many Internationalized Domain Names

Though Russia has so far proven to be a major success story — with more than 800,000 IDN registrations so far (and counting) — most other IDNs are have a long ways to go yet. Arabic IDNs in particular face an uphill battle because web browsers offer poor (and inconsistent) support for them.
I noticed in the report that India's IDNs were not all properly displayed. So here's a screen shot from our IDN poster that illustrates the wealth of scripts used within India, as illustrated by the country's seven (yes, seven) approved IDNs:
As of today, 26 countries have received one or more IDNs; I've collected the full list here.

I wonder why did India not apply for some more internationalized tlds ?

Devanagari probably covers both Hindi and Marathi, but what about Malayalam, Odia/Oriya and Kannada ? All languages with 30-40 millions speakers each and no tld. + with ICANN not really expecting to collect application fees..

The traffic could be massive just by the growth of smartphones with internet capabilities for Arabian and India languages.

IDNs are perfectly suited for the large non-English speaking populations that may never have a computer but will search the internet by use of their phones, or use their phone as the 'computer' to drive visuals to a larger screen or monitor for easier viewing in homes or offices.

Re: India: One Country, Many Internationalized Domain Names

Language is a delicate subject in india, the ethnic diversity of the country often creates some social tension amongst indians and language is a big part of that cultural diversity along with religion, ethnicity and social condition.
Personally i was surprised that they applied for so many languages to begin with...and thus leaving out some equally important ones. I expected that they would just go for hindi in a first stage and then later applied for all the major ones...
Not sure what the reaction will be when some ehtnic groups start to realize that their language was left out at this first stage but i'm guessing it wont be positive.
