Re: 申城 what is this?

Nice name.
It means Shanghai City

申 is short for Shanghai
and 城 is city
so ,the words should be Shanghai City

Regards,
Pamela

ok, thanks. nice surprise as you say.

Is it a popular way of saying it, or an old fashioned way... just trying to put a value to it relative to the other way fo saying Shanghai City?

as I have said before, I fish with Dynamite. If you blow up enough fish, you may land a rare one.

However I'm still not sure how popular it is, and anyways it's 2nd prize only (.net)

I only regged it as I stumbled across it on a Chinese web page, but couldn't make head or tail of what it was. It had a few million google hits, so I bagged it and moved on...

I think that correct translation of 城 in Chinese is "town" but not "city" - sometimes people said "城市" means city, the single word "市" also means "city" ~
But most of the Chinese will translate the single word "城" as "town" -

for example: "中國城" is China Town - but not China City !

Maybe "申城" have it's own special meaning for "Shanghai City" - but I do not heard before... (I'm a Chinese but living in Taiwan)

For Bwhhisc: That indeed means new china. It is a popular word but not a common word. It is mostly used for the politics of China.

Pamela? Do you know this is a female name?

But you are right, 申城 is Shanghai's nickname. 城 can mean City or Town. 申 was taken from 春申君 the ruler in Shanghai area during War States Period 2300 years ago. 申城 has been used quite frequently in the last century in China.

Besides "Shanghai", 申城 is the 2nd most popular name of Shanghai, but don't expect a lot of searches for this name. Its use is very much limited to literature and newspaper, rarely used conversationally.

Guess who owns 申城.com? :-)
