Thanks, 555, for the news (but no thanks for the photo).

I'm glad they chose .қаз instead of .каз. Kazakh is the national language, not Russian.

It is possible they applied for both, since Russian is still considered official there, so getting both would at least make more sense.

I also don't understand why you get so excited over the "National Language" label? internet is supposed to be free of barriers. I come from Belarus, I don't speak Belorussian very well, in fact probably not even close to be able to have a conversation in it, my first language is Russian. People who live in the Cities and Big towns are the same as me, all over former USSR. Doubt many people can speak Kazakh or Uzbek or Belorussian or Ukrainian, Estonian... on the same level they can speak read or wright in Russian even in those countries.

It's a bit dangerous to generalize.

There are quite a few ethnic Kazakhs who speak Russian better than they speak Kazakh, so you are right about that. Without government intervention, the Kazakh language would probably die out over time. But in fact the government is trying to revive Kazakh. The tricky part is figuring out how to do that without scaring away the Russian speakers.

The Baltic states (including Estonia) are a different matter. I think very few ethnic Estonians speak Russian better than Estonian. And if they could figure out how to drive out the remaining Russian speakers without violating EU directives, they probably would.

A tricky issue. If you speak a major language, such as Russian or English, it can be hard to appreciate the situation in a country like Estonia. There are only about 1.3 million people in Estonia, and only 68% of them are ethnic Estonians. If Estonian is not spoken in Estonia, where will it be spoken?

Why does it need to be spoken against people's will?

I'm not actually in favor of linguistic repression, but I want to explain the Baltic States' point of view, since it's one that may be unfamiliar.

It isn't a question of freedom of speech, but of accommodation. Of course Russians should be allowed to speak Russian to each other, if they want. But should the Estonian government provide Russian-language schools, at taxpayer expense, for the children of Russian speakers? Should government offices provide Russian translators for people who never bothered to learn Estonian? Can you call yourself an Estonian citizen if you don't even know Estonian? (My understanding is that in practice the answer to all of these questions is "yes", because of EU directives. But I can understand why many Estonians would prefer to say "no").

You know Avtal, it was never a problem to begin with when state languages were considered secondary and mandatory in schools. All communication, literature and documentation was created in Russian first then translated to national language for those who are interested. When these countries removed Russian from schools, and everything else it was never really replaced by anything on the same level of education. If you know someone who can explain the Pythagorean theorem in their own native Kazakh, Uzbek or Estonian, it would be extremely surprising to me.

Sure, no problem. Here it is in Kazakh:

Пифагор Теоремасы– геометрияның тік бұрышты үшбұрышты қабырғаларының арасындағы байланысты тұжырымдайтын теоремасы. П.т. қысқаша былай тұжырымдалады: тік бұрышты үшбұрыштың гипотенузасының квадраты катеттері квадратының қосындысына тең.
(courtesy of Wikipedia).

This is actually a pretty good test. The Kazakh Wikipedia article exists, but is short. No Uzbek article at all. The Estonian article is a bit better, and the Georgian article is quite extensive.
