Twitter study reveals Arabic growth

A positive trend to get the masses online in any language

http://news.yahoo.com/twitter-study-...172930197.html

The popularity of Twitter has soared in the Arab world over the past year, a study published Thursday revealed, reflecting the key role of the social networking site in the "Arab Spring" revolutions.

Online Twitter messages, or tweets, in Arabic rocketed from 99,000 a day in October 2010 to over two million last month, social media monitor Semiocast showed in its study into the most popular languages used on the popular site. Arabic is now the eighth most popular language on the microblogging site, where users leave short messages of no more than 140 characters.

Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites were used to chronicle the recent uprisings in the Middle East and north Africa and mobilise support. "With recent events, Twitter has grown exceptionally fast in the Middle East," the report said.

Prominent bloggers including Lina Ben Mhenni, a Tunisian journalist who described the uprising against Zine el Abidine Ben Ali's regime, and Google executive Wael Ghonim, who was a central inspiration to protesters in Tahrir Square in Cairo, were praised for their "real time" depiction of events.

English remains the main language of Twitter, with over 70 million tweets posted daily, but now represents a considerably smaller percentage of the daily global number of tweets, dropping from over 60 percent in 2009 to just under 40 percent two years later. Tweets in Japanese -- the second most popular language on Twitter -- account for 14.2 percent of the daily total, down from 19 percent a year ago.

In contrast the number of Thai tweets has multiplied by 470 percent. Around half a million Chinese tweets make it onto the site every day, despite a ban on Twitter in the country.

The study covered a sample of 5.6 billion tweets, or 10 percent of tweets globally, collected between 1 July 2010 and 21 October 2011 in 61 languages.

Cellphones are the computers of the future....my kids use their iphones to surf the internet more than their laptops. Twitter and these kind of trendy communiction sites will drive the market for phones and help bring a wider audience to the internet at the same time. My Arabic traffic gets better month to month, nice steady growth month in and month out.

We are now seriously looking at getting Bridge Inspectors to use only a smart phone. It will replace camera, notebook, laptop and satnav. Not only that we believe we can set the whole thing up so that they will actually be much more organised, more accurate and more efficient, at a fraction of the cost.

I agree, before long tablets will probably be "built in" to backpacks and clothing articles.

For the general public anyways, I'd agree. It's only a matter of time. You'll still have the "geeks" and "gamers" that will want to build their own systems.

squirrels point is that a cellphone/tablet will not replace the corporate need for a laptop.

It will replace the corporate need for a lot of laptops.

How many people actually know how to code?

How many have more than a very basic understanding of spreadsheets?

It all depends on your purpose. Smartphones are great for people who mainly use the internet for mind-numbing games, twitter and facebook updates and youtube videos. So pretty much everyone...

...Except for me. For my surfing habbits which involve a lot of reading, writing, copying and pasting ( :D ) it's totally useless. So even though I'm an internet junkie I'm not envious about my gf's Iphone.

Also highly viable for menu driven applications where only limited type in is required. Where we are going back doing repeat inspections much of it just confirmation and an updated photograph. Ever tried taking pictures from a hoist or on rope from your desktop or even your laptop. Camera are great but with Smartphone you can effective put the photos straight into your report. Desktops also do not make great SatNavs or Lone Worker devices.

Yeah, but that's also a very special case. Most work I know of just isn't very convenient on a small touchscreen. One would need a keyboard / mouse and screen holder / stand attached to it. And then we're back where we started.

BTW: Tablets were around for a good couple of years. No one gave a shit until Apple made their lemmings believe that they would need them.

Your cube bound 9to5er, is not going to work all day on an isheep; laptops/pcs are here to stay for the non-mobile workforce, for whom make up the vast majority of the online workforce

Agree 100%, guessing the monitors will just keep getting bigger and more 3-d and voice recognition will replace typing in many cases.

Except Apple made it work, but instead of trying to keep ahead of the field they are now seeking competitive advantage through litigation. Samsung will bury them.
