Verisign Director of Product Management Sarah Langstone on IDN's/New gTLD's

Pause to read, 3 'parts':

http://screencast.com/t/gH801yg9iU

"We've announced that we're going to apply for internationalised domain name variants of .com and .net in languages that it makes sense for us to do so, so we've been doing quite a lot of work in getting ready for those applications."

Yes, this has been said in more detail before.

The first five are no-brainers, but I'm surprised he mentioned Hebrew instead of Hindi. Then again, he suggested that this related to the number of existing registrations of second level IDNs, which might suggest that Verisign's focus is more on languages that appeal to its existing customer base rather than exploring new markets. On the other hand, he might just have forgotten to mention Hindi as one they are applying for. Difficult to say. Time will tell I guess.

Out of interest, does anyone have a list of the number of IDN.com/net regs by language? Has Verisign even ever released this info?

Re: Verisign Director of Product Management Sarah Langstone on IDN's/New gTLD's

Also notice Pat said Verisign would apply for 9 to 20 transliterations of .com
http://domainnamewire.com/2011/07/07...tlds-and-idns/

discussed in detail here
http://www.idnforums.com/forums/2966...-and-idns.html

9-20 is pretty accurate, it's not like he said a dozen or ten-fifteen. I believe Hindi will make the cut

Re: Verisign Director of Product Management Sarah Langstone on IDN's/New gTLD's

Nice one Squirrel!

Here's the list again:

.com (May 2011 - 791,509)

Latin: 190,770 (24.10%)
Greek: 2,851 (0.36%)
Cyrillic: 31,581 (3.99%)
Hebrew: 18,885 (2.38%)
Arabic / Persian etc: 40,817 (5.15%)
India: 5,289 (0.67%)
Thai: 15,500 (1.95%)
Hirangana / Katakana: 30,904 (3.90%)
Korean: 87,036 (10.99%)
Chinese / Kanji: 362,535 (45.80%)
Misc: 5,341 (0.67%)

Hebrew clearly beats Indian languages there.

But I agree Hindi will probably make the cut. Thai almost certainly. I hope so anyway.

Yeah if they are doing 9-20 scripts then Thai and Hindi are most likely in as well. Mulligan's stats on IDN.com registrations from highest to lowest regs :

.com (May 2011 - 791,509)

1) Chinese / Kanji: 362,535 (45.80%)
2) Latin: 190,770 (24.10%)
3) Korean: 87,036 (10.99%)
4) Arabic / Persian etc: 40,817 (5.15%)
5) Cyrillic: 31,581 (3.99%)
6) Hirangana / Katakana: 30,904 (3.90%)
7) Hebrew: 18,885 (2.38%)
8) Thai: 15,500 (1.95%)
9) India: 5,289 (0.67%)
10)Greek: 2,851 (0.36%)
11) Misc: 5,341 (0.67%)

It would be good if Verisign notes that according to Google, the number of internet users in Thailand as of the end of August 2011 was 25 million people (or a bit more than 1/3 of the population) and growing which is quite a bit more than Hebrew internet users. As previously mentioned, I suspect that there are lower amount of Thai IDN.com regs compared to Hebrew.com as most Thais are not very comfortable with English and are not able to follow IDN development news compared to the Hebrew speaking population who are mostly bilingual in English. The pent-up demand for Thai is quite a bit and should be very well received by Thais once Verisign gets approval for Thai.com domains (IDN.IDN). India is also another bright spot for extra ordinary growth once the Indic speaking mass goes online.

PS:Mulligan, do you happen to have up-to-date stats for IDN.com regs in various languages by any chance?

Yeah, but we get more Arabic traffic revenue from Israel than we do the UAE.

I think it is very early days.

Most of my best domains are in "Misc." (I showed up too late to get the best domains in more common languages).

I never researched those. I often mistake Georgian for Kannada and vice versa.. other than that not much experience with them.
