Study about social media cen5or5hip in Chlna

Quote:
With Twitter and Facebook bl0cked in Chlna, the stream of information from Chlnese domestic social media provides a case study of social media behavior under the influence of active cen5or5hip. While much work has looked at efforts to prevent access to information in Chlna (including IP bl0cking of foreign Web sites or search engine filt3ring), we present here the first large–scale analysis of p0litical c0ntent cen5or5hip in social media, i.e., the active deleti0n of messages published by individuals.

Re: Study about social media cen5or5hip in Chlna

This study investigates blocking of searches, and deletion of messages involving keywords. Deleting portions of messages, including emails, worry people even more, since it's harder to detect.

However, altering messages is a worse threat. When content is altered, the parties involved do not know in some cases that it has been changed. It's not as obvious as blocked sites or deleted messages.

If you have a Chinese language website with some content that is controversial, e.g. Tibet, Falun Gong, etc. then you can assume it's blocked entirely. But if your site has even slightly sensitive content I suggest you regularly monitor exactly what appears inside the country compared to the real site. Just saying.
