Well, let's put it this way, every term has a value, but none of them are as valuable as the word HOTEL because there are so many forms for the word hotel in China.

旅馆 has been used for a few hundred years, and it is still being used everywhere in the world. It's definitely not junk and it's not very popular either.

It's not correct for dictionaries to give 酒店 as "wine shop" or "liquor store' (酒铺).

Just like 饭店, a place to enjoy "rice", not a place to sell "rice". 酒店 is a pub, not "liquor store'.

When "hotel" was first showing up in China, people perceived it as a pub (unlike 旅馆, only lodging) because the ground floor of the hotel was always with pub and restaurant, and wine glasses and bottles of whisky were easy to be seen. When hotel became popular, so was its erroneous name.
