The Media Not Talking Much about Verisign's i-gTLDs

http://money.cnn.com/2012/06/13/tech...pansion-gtlds/ :

"The applicant list included several automakers like Fiat, Chrysler and Volkswagen -- as well as a few banks including JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) and Barclays. Several tech companies, including Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), Netflix (NFLX) and AOL (AOL), also submitted applications to turn their brand name into a domain. CNNMoney parent company Time Warner filed an application for .HBO.
Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) submitted applications for 76 gTLDs, including .read, .store, .music, .fire, .cloud, .news and .pay. Google also played big, applying for 101 new domains."

-no mentioning of .com translits applied by Verisign in various languages. I hope Verisign doesn't make the same mistake of not publicizing this extensively and make it big news. Nothing to wait for now Verisign, show some vision.

Has anyone else seen .com translits making big news anywhere else, even in other languages?

Re: The Media Not Talking Much about Verisign's i-gTLDs

Doesn't surprise me.
For English speaking media to talk about idns, they have to at least show they have some level of understanding; then there's the risk of having foreign text you can't read that could mean anything; then there's font issues with having multi-byte characters etc

When there's close to 2000 gTLDs to write about, why burden yourself with all the above, when its easier to just not mention it

Re: The Media Not Talking Much about Verisign's i-gTLDs

Please report what you see online about .com/.net translit news. I'll go first:

http://domainnamewire.com/2012/06/13...m-and-3-of-net

Doesn't use unicode to spell out .com/.net translits in various languages.

Edit: Understandable that many western readers might not have proper fonts installed to view them.

A couple links from Russia:

http://www.lenta.ru/news/2012/06/13/dotgoogle/

что было получено 116 заявок на домены с нелатинской письменностью. Известно, что отечественные заявители отправляли документы на регистрацию доменов .ДЕТИ, .МОСКВА и .MOSCOW
http://www.rg.ru/2012/06/13/domen-site-anons.html

From Israel:

QUOTE: Ahead of the press conference, Icann also revealed that 166 of the claims were for what it termed "internationalised domain names" - generic top-level-domains (gTLDs) that are not in the Latin alphabet.

"That means that if you're a person living in China or in somewhere in India then you might have the opportunity to use the internet purely in your native script," Icann's president and chief executive, Rod Beckstrom, told the BBC.

"It's going to make the internet more approachable for people. Also we're seeing a trend on mobile devices to people liking short names and there will be opportunities for shorter names here, just because what was previously a second-level name now becomes first-level."

Mentions the ability to register IDN gtlds. No mention of com/net/org translits.

Not much else from Greek media besides AP news rehash.

Re: The Media Not Talking Much about Verisign's i-gTLDs

i found this" My conclusion. Keep renewing those .com’s. The grandkids will thank you for your investment. The gtld’s are all destined to years of litigation, fighting, arbitration, disputes and lawyers, lawyers and more lawyers. If and when they ever do finally see the light of day, they will be welcomed by …absolutely no one and will quickly shrivel up and die as we have already seen by many past tld failures having much stronger foundations.
The one tld application I liked was .FAIL since I think it succinctly summarizes this entire foolhardy scenario".
