Could well be. When I checked for Kannada names in 2010 I haven't seen many names taken apart from Bangalore. I was able to hand reg prime terms for Business, Health and Software. Passed them on to squirrel due to lack of pacience.
Anyway there's plenty of opportunities left if you believe in Kannada.

Re: the new guy....
@ Jay
does afternic accept paypal....? i don't see a paypal logo at the bottom of the afternic website; so , i'm not sure....
right now my plan A is afternic.... the service seems to be nice; the problem is the minimum fee....
i'm working on a plan B; but it requires more trust in me, the seller by the buyer..... the good part is no minimum fee....
@ bumblebee man and Drewbert
i've been looking into foreign languages, and i've come across a german one.... but it's a google translate.... so, i'm taking it slow..... if it makes the cut, it'll be my first foreign language IDN......
Also, if you guys are looking to buy indian language IDNs, then i suggest looking into Hindi first, followed by Kannada, then Malayalam.....
Hindi is the national language and majority of north indians are fluent in hindi.....
Karnataka, the state where Kannada originates from,is the software services hub of the country.....
Kerala, the state where Malayalam originates from, has the highest literacy rate in the country.... with more and more people moving to dubai, among other places for job....

What about Bengali- 211,000,000 speakers. Official language of Bangladesh (Ethnologue, 1999) and one of the official languages of India for state of West Bengal and Tripura. Seems that would be the logical #2 for India.
Kannada has about 44,000,000 speakers and Malayalam has about 40,000,000 also.
Marathi, Telugu and Tamil all have about 70,000,000 each.

Is this for Escrow only?
I can't see much reason to list a domain at Afternic anymore. I can't even find a way to browse through the listing? There seems to be a (pitiful) search function now, and nothing else?
Another auction system that's either lost the plot or never had it in the first place (Hi SEDO!)

Re: the new guy....
given the choice between hindi and bengali, wouldn't i go for a hindi domain, seeing how there's a pretty good chance people who speak bengali can also speak hindi....? plus hindi is the country's national language......
bengali is language you'll find in the north eastern part of india mainly.....
whereas hindi, i suspect encompasses a larger region.....
i wasn't looking at the number of people speaking a particular language but more into other aspects like internet access, literacy......
i guess i should have included telugu and tamil in my list, but not quite sure at what position.... the reason being i don't know what to look for in these regions....
i was born in kerala and brought up karnataka..... so i know what i would look for in these regions..... kerala has a high literacy rate with more and more people traveling abroad..... so, domains names that have something to do with travel and/or jobs....?
karnataka is a major software development and IT services hub...... so, domain names pertaining to those services.....?
it would be rude on my part to judge the potential quality of domain names relating to regions i know not much of..... so , i didn't include those in my list.....

That's what we do here all the time. Why would it be rude?

Excellent observation....thanks for pointing that out.
And your reasoning for chosing Kannada and Malayalam are good ones. No worries on posting whats on your mind, you will get a thick skin here pretty quick.

Yeah Escrow only.
To browse through the listings, go to 'buy domains' and then enter xn--.

Wouldn't that be rude according to your own logic?

Re: the new guy....
@ bumblebee man
the difference is i'm looking into italian and other languages for my own needs, so i'm willing to take the risk..... but it would be rude to speculate on a language that i'm not an expert on, if my views would be taken as research points by other members....
still working on Plan B at the moment...... looking at paypal's services to see if it can help me..... i really want to bypass minimum fees.....
