the new guy....
hey guys, i just joined a few days back.....
i like to call myself a "domain investor" rather than a domainer..... sounds classier.... :D
my third domain purchase was an IDN..... i don't want to talk about my first two......
i've bought a few more IDNs since then.... a few high profile ones that need ageing; and a few i'd like to transfer to the caring hands of a fellow domainer.....
and thats why i'm here..... and maybe make some friends along the way......
i do have a few questions about the auctions here, if you guys don't mind answering or guide me towards a link......
how do you guys do your transactions....
what i was thinking was to have an auction here, then i put a buy now on that domain at sedo; and have the auction winner buy from there......?
safe mode of transfer for both parties...... but the problem is, if sedo charges a minimum fee on buy now sales ($50), the asking price here will be too high.... (i've sent a letter to sedo asking whether the minimum fee applies for Buy Now sales, waiting for a reply.....)
is escrow transactions safe.......
lets say i sold a domain.... .... i transfer the domain to the buyer....... but then the buyer rejects the sale, the payment goes back to the buyer; but since i already pushed the domain to the buyer, he gets the domain too......
am i not right..... am i missing something....?
would like to you guys to weigh in your thoughts......
happy domaineering.....

Fee for "buy now" at Sedo is 10% but nobody here would go for that route.
Win an auction here and the deal is generally transacted via buyer and seller on a trust basis. Because there are members from around the world with dubious contacts anybody who reneged on a deal would have a knock on his/her door!

For a high profile priced name it is wise to use Escrow.com, I don't think anybody here would have a bad word.Personally used them on many occasions.
would like to you guys to weigh in your thoughts......
happy domaineering.....

We tend to operate on the honors system around here. I don't think anyone would bother with escrow for any sale under 2k, but it depends on how well you know the buyer/seller.

It's done on a 3rd party basis. The 3rd party (in this case Sedo) accepts the payment and the domain. Once it has both, it sends the payment to the seller and the domain to the buyer.
I used Sedo once for an escrow exchange and it was crap. Afternic is better. Escrow.com is another option, but I haven't tried it.

Welcome. The key is to build up trust / reputation. Then you don't need bloody Sedo. Where are you from?

Re: the new guy....
thanks for the reply guys......
@Wot
i know about that 10% fees for Buy Now sales; it's the minimum fees i'm not sure about......
if i sell a domain for 12$, the fees comes to 1.2$ if my math is correct.... i don't think sedo would go for that and that's why i think minimum fees would apply..... their FAQ isn't clear about this.....
for the high profile ones in my portfolio, my game plan is to age them and get them into sedo's great domain auction and go from there......
@ Jay
i wasn't sure escrow.com handled domain names; physical products yes, but didn't know they could handle domain names......
i didn't know Afternic had an escrow service..... i think i'll look into it.... thank you.....
@ bumblebee man
thank you....
i think the best way to build trust would be to make the transaction process safe and quick for both parties..... so, seeing how the sedo's "Buy Now" option might not work, i think i'll look into escrow.com and afternic.....
i'm from india btw....
mostly concentrating on IDNs with english words having foreign accent marks....

There's no minimum fee but the minimum "buy now" amount is $60.

Good luck in convincing Sedo that IDNs are great.

Well, in this case you're definitely wrong here and you should stick with Sedo. How about Hindi?

There are only a few: résumé, café, and coöperation (in 1920's spelling).

Oh. You're concentrating on phishing IDN's like applê.com etc?
Forget those. All you will end up doing is giving yourself a bad rep. Use your language knowledge advantage to register IDN.com's in YOUR language in devangari script and sit on them until next year when they will go WAY UP in value.

Good advice.
Mixed script domains will only earn you shame at monikerblog.com

Re: the new guy....
@ bumblebee man
ahh so there is a minimum "buy Now" amount at sedo, i thought it was a minimum fee, but you are right, its a minimum buy now amount.... same thing anyway.....
i know IDNs which require translations won't do much at sedo; like i said i concentrate on english words with accent marks..... i've seen a lot of those at sedo auctions....
i'm a newbie, so i don't want to get translations based IDNs just now.... but i'll look into Hindi ones at later point in time....
@ Drewbert
sir, i might be a newbie, but i know not to dance around trade marked words or similar looking or sounding.....
if i did, i would have bought kià.com (XN--KI-KIA.com) a long time ago....
i understand there might trust issues as i'm new here; and that the best way to resolve this is to reveal my portfolio..... but i don't want to end up having to fight backorders in case i forget to renew..... i hope i won't forget..... just thinking that gives me the shudders....

Re: the new guy....
@ Jay
hey, i've been looking briefly at afternic and escrow.com.....
afternic also has a minimum fee.....
Quote:
3 % DN Escrow fee ($60 minimum) can be paid by either the buyer or seller
|
Source
couldn't find one at escrow.com..... but i have to say, afternic seems like a better option; minus the minimum fee....

Re: the new guy....
That's good to hear you are not regging TM's.
With .कॉम and .नेट confirmed to be in the first round of newGTLD's you would be ABSOLUTELY NUTS with the language advantage you have not to be regging Hindi's FLAT OUT right now.
You have the same opportunity the early English(/Latin) ASCII domainers had. Use it!

Re: the new guy....
OK. Certainly plenty of good stuff available in Malayalam and Kannada, IIRC. Just have to wait for Verisign to go for the .com transliterations in each.
Reg a few good keywords in each in .com for your retirement fund and sit on them.

Re: the new guy....
i've already begun looking into it.... :D
i'll take my time make sure i have the right translations and go from there......
just to let you guys know, don't trust google translator with hindi words.... (i don't think you guys would, but just in case....) a few words gave me the wrong translations.......
i thought united domains could be used to pre-register .कॉम, i was wrong.....

Re: the new guy....
there are about 10 domains regged in Kannada (I used to have 2-3 top terms). Everything else is available. Go for it. It may be speculative. English terms with accents are not speculative. They are crap and they'll always be crap.

Funny, I thought I hard more than that in Kannada, I know I have some in Malayalam but I think they are either single characters or Geographics.

The stand out thing about Afternic is the one-on-one service and the step-by-step process that you can easily track as either buyer or seller. If both the buyer and seller are active, the transaction can be completed on Afternic in a matter of hours, whereas with Sedo it takes days. But for Afternic you might have to check first that they will activate the credit card payment option, which they don't always offer as a default option for first-time users.
