Re: Verisign has lost the right to increase .com prices

My first thought is that VRSN has to grow the domain base if it wants to keep growing its revenue. If there was any doubt about their commitment to idn TLDs, the market will take care of that from now on.

Re: Verisign has lost the right to increase .com prices

Ah that is awesome news. Not just for us portfolio holders, but as my "side-job" as a registrar as well. All those VeriSign price increases create so much admin every year and a half.

Best news for months

Re: Verisign has lost the right to increase .com prices

this was the best part of verisign statements on the subject.

Verisign CEO Jim Bidzos said that the deal was in the best interests of the company. It still gives the company the presumptive right for renewal, he said.

Growth, he said, will come in future from an expansion of its .com installed base, new IDN gTLD variants, and providing back-end registry services to other new gTLDs.

Yes, because there's no price cap on these new IDN gTLD variants...

I would think and hope that Verisign would not charge outrageously for unlocking these variants if they are serious about growing their registration base.

In the beginning maybe (just to test the waters), but there's nothing stopping them from raising prices whenever they feel like it in the future.

I didn't want to say anything when the announcement came out, but I was wondering whether anyone besides me would realize that being designated as a source of revenue growth was not entirely a good thing.

But you figured it out on your own! You should all be proud of yourselves.

Verisign hopes to see IDNs go from the current 1 million registered to 20 million + registered. All with reoccuring residual annual renewals.

Thats where they will hit a home run. So without getting .com price increases one of their main focus will be to market IDNs as a new revenue strategy, it just got bumped up in priority.

20 million IDNs at $7.85 a pop is a BIG number....and it could be lots more than 20 million over the next few decades.

No but Verisgn and ICANN are very much now in the headlights politically on pricing.

Anything that is seen as dicriminatory strengthens the hand of the ITC.
