Firefox displaying unicode in URL bar?

My lazy way of converting unicode to punycode for an IDN is to pull up FF and stick it in the URL bar. Today I did it for 丈夫.com, and it didn't change. I tried others... same thing!

I'm using a Mac, and FF is up to date.

Re: Firefox displaying unicode in URL bar?

They have been called out by ETF or Unicode foundation, basically they published guidelines for handling IDNs and they clearly said clients should not be policing fucking TLDs. Instead they should look at the codepoints to figure out if there's mixed scripts etc. Mozilla changed its stance then. There's a page somewhere on the web that summarizes their new approach to the "idn problem"

This has been like this for a while. I remember I was pretty surprised when I saw it, too.

Re: Firefox displaying unicode in URL bar?

Found a bug. Pasting a RTL punycode into the URL bar screws up the resulting unicode.

What do you mean by this? I do it everyday, everything is fine.

Can you show an example? If I post punycode, it results in it swapping to unicode correctly.

Re: Firefox displaying unicode in URL bar?

Thanks, excellent new indeed! Firefox has been displaying Thai characters for me for about 2 weeks now. I found out about it because I usually used Firefox as a shortcut to get punycodes like Gamma. I thought it was a glitch on my system but great to know it`s systemwide. Firefox currently represents about 13.39% of the browser market share in Thailand, with the rest being IE7,8,9, Chrome and Safari. IE6 is almost non-existent now. So with this development, true Thai IDN display is getting very close to 100%, 92% at the very least when adding available stats from Truehits.

I must've fat fingered the cut and paste. Now it's working. All good.

Re: Firefox displaying unicode in URL bar?

Firefox was an early supporter of IDNs, and even had them working for the email client that was part of the Mozilla Suite.

Then someone spread some panic about phishing, and they backtracked.

Yes, even the phishing issue has been a two edge sword.

Extended the process unnecessarily probably pushing some over the edge financial, but overall has probably strenthened our position, making those that survived even wealthier.

Re: Firefox displaying unicode in URL bar?

Just developed a site with my developer and he asked me to look over the site and provided the link. Clicked the link and was almost in question thinking there was a mistake and when the hell did this happen? Almost there, few more months. Makes our investment seem more tangible seeing it like this actually working in the url.
