Kazakh will be written in Latin by 2025

The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, announced on Dec. 14 that work will soon begin to convert the Kazakh language from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet, with the goal of completing the conversion by 2025. Details are scanty.

An article in Russian on the subject: Казахстан перейдет с кириллицы на "современную" латиницу.

Wikipedia has a Romanization scheme for Kazakh (here), but it isn't clear whether that is the scheme that will be used.

Kazakhstan is a bilingual country: the Kazakh language, spoken by 64.4% of the population, has the status of the "state" language, while Russian, which is spoken by almost all Kazakhstanis, is declared the "official" language, and is used routinely in business. Wikipedia
Will the Official Language - Russian - also be written in English?

No, by that time Russian will have been replaced by Mandarin, written in pinyin.

No by then Pinyin will be limited to a small group of American's that have conceded that the Chinese are not going to adopt English.

The general trend is that English is written in Cyrillic and passed off as Russian.

Sad but true (пиар is one recent example, and how unfortunate that компьютер replaced the expressive электронная вычислительная машина).

But I suppose in the late 19th century, purists were complaining about French being written in Cyrillic and passed off as Russian (шедевр and дежурить, among many others).

That's already the case, but I hope they respect the apostrophe.

Re: Kazakh will be written in Latin by 2025

A pinyin-like alphabet was used for the Kazakh language in China in 1964-84.

Interesting! You learn something new every day.

I couldn't find any sources on this in English, but the Russian Wikipedia article on Kazakh alphabets has some details. The article suggests that a future Romanization of the Kazakh alphabet could include spelling reform, so the result might be something more complicated than a simple transliteration from Cyrillic.

This all makes investing in Kazakh IDNs a bit tricky.

Re: Kazakh will be written in Latin by 2025

i heard the next dooms day date is 2016.

also, the president is 72 years old, 2025 is far away, he's been in power since 1990 even before the USSR demolished. The next president will be under pressure for sure from Putin government and is likely to crack. imo

the neighboring Uzbekistan has been making that change for a decade already, and still write in Russian.

In 1969, California was supposed to fall into the ocean. It didn't. Ever since that time, I have been skeptical of doomsday prophecies.

I agree that Nazarbayev's successor may decide to cancel the Romanization project. But despite any pressure from Putin (who is not so young himself), Romanization makes economic sense. English is a much more economically important language than Russian, so Kazakhstan might prefer an alphabet that will make it easier for Kazakh speakers to learn English. Visitors to Kazakhstan from neighboring China will be more comfortable with Latin than Cyrillic letters, as will visitors from Turkic-language countries such as Azerbaijan and Turkey.

And I wouldn't use Uzbekistan as a counter-example; Kazakhstan is much richer and better organized.

Re: Kazakh will be written in Latin by 2025

The situation is more complex than it seems at first.

• Arabic script, used before 1927.
• Cyrillic script, Ibrahim Altynsarin version, rarely used in 1800s.
• Latin spcript, Uniform Turkic Alphabet, used 1927 to 1940 in Kazakhstan.
• Cyrillic script, Sarsen Amanzholov version, used in Kazakhstan and Mongolia, 1940-.
• Cyrillic script, 1957 version with different letters, used in Kazakhstan and Mongolia, 1957-.
• Latin script, modified version based on pinyin, used in China, 1964-84.
• Arabic script, modified version of Arabic script used before 1927, used in China, 1984-.
• Arabic script, used in Iran.
• Latin script, using Turkish alphabet used in Turkey.

In current official use:

• Arabic Script, modified version, — in Altay Prefecture and the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Population of Kazakhs in China: over one million.

• Cyrillic, 1957 version — Republic of Kazakhstan and Bayan-Ölgiy Province, Mongolia.

They aren't thinking about learning English. Rather they are interested in having a unified Turkic script for all Turkic-language speaking countries.

So they are: Common Turkic Alphabet Considered. I wouldn't have known about that if you hadn't mentioned it.

Anyway, if the Romanization of Kazakh is delayed until this rather vague project is completed, then Kazakh is likely still to be written in Cyrillic well beyond 2025. I'm starting to feel better about Cyrillic Kazakh IDNs.
