warren buffet takes stake in verisign stock

"Interesting developments
So what does Berkshire Hathaway's latest quarterly 13F filing tell us? Here are a few interesting details:

Berkshire Hathaway didn't sell out of any positions completely, but it did add a few.

VeriSign, an Internet infrastructure services company, recently posted solid fourth-quarter results, with revenue up 13% over year-ago levels and operating margins surging by nearly 30%. The company also realized a net gain in registered domain names of 6.4% for the year. It raised its registry fee for .net names by 10%. VeriSign enjoys recurring revenue, and is also looking into developing new sources of revenue''

Is this a indication that Buffet is bullish on the demand for idn.idn?

Re: warren buffet takes stake in verisign stock

Interesting post, if I am not mistaken Buffet has historically staid away from most tech stocks preferring instead "businesses he understands". I'd be interested to know where he and BH in general see VRSN future growth coming from.

Maybe just a short term play though thinking VRSN is undervalued after its most recent com contract renewal (?)

The "new sources of revenue" mostly means monetizing VRSN's patents portfolio as per the last earnings conference call

And even more so because he is a value investor.

Yeah, but I doubt it's related to IDN.

In which case it does not meet the criteria of a business that he understands.

it think he bought Heinz because of the unlimited market potential for American Delicacies in a booming economy.

I mean who would want to eat all that Chinese food when they can buy authentic baked beans.

Probably culture it as luxury band and charge ten bucks a tin.

I think it's a great indication that the "old money" investors are starting to understand the internet in general. It's taken this long for them to catch up.

Re: warren buffet takes stake in verisign stock

I don't even think this is mainly about future growth. Buffet likes "boring" companies with a solid business model and a quasi-monopoly market share. Therefore Verisign fits well into his portfolio. You'd never see him invest in Twitter or the likes.

Yes, there is Tescos in every town and through most of the Far East as well.

Just taking the Mickey.

Sometimes you think he has to related to that Russian General who claimed to have shot down a 10K Tonne meteor doing 50 times the speed of sound.

Did that idiot even realise that the compression the Meteor is already experiencing is 50 times what he can achieve on the ground within a range of few feet. Take away the atmosphere and the effectiveness of explosive diminishes considerably. No wonder Russia lost the Cold War.

Of course is a 100 Megatone Nuclear Missile is the Civil Defence Weapon of choice when detonated overhead, then that might just have done it!

Re: warren buffet takes stake in verisign stock

Does Buffet knows what a domain name is or is this a BH only common tiny investment they do everyday?

BH really does not trade everyday or flip short term plays they only added two new stocks in the 4th quarter. below is a list of their holdings, but vrsn is a relatively small purchase 3.7 million shares.

I suspect that a lot of their profit comes from suckers that follow them into their plays driving stock prices higher. Buying big stakes by negotiation cheap, followed by massive publicity and then inevitable price hike as the dream chasers move in. They seem to liquidate quitely and then move on to the next mark.

Re: warren buffet takes stake in verisign stock

The Verisign investment is puzzling; it seems outside of BH's usual portfolio (low-tech businesses with steady growth potential).

Heinz makes more sense, even as a bet on Chinese growth. KFC, for instance, has done pretty well in China (until a recent scandal involving unapproved antibiotics). And ketchup, the product for which Heinz is best known in the US, may have a Chinese origin.

From Wikipedia:

In the 1690s the Chinese mixed a concoction of pickled fish and spices and called it (in the Amoy dialect) kôe-chiap or kê-chiap (鮭汁, Mandarin guī zhī) meaning the brine of pickled fish (鮭, carp; 汁, juice) or shellfish.

By the early 18th century, the table sauce had made it to the Malay states (present day Malaysia and Singapore), where it was discovered by British explorers. The Indonesian-Malay word for the sauce was kĕchap. That word evolved into the English word "ketchup".

A somewhat different recipe than what Heinz uses, of course.
