Russian is now the second most used language on the web

Russian is also the most used language in several countries that belonged to the Soviet Union: 79.0% in Ukraine, 86.9% in Belarus, 84.0% in Kazakhstan, 79.6% in Uzbekistan, 75.9% in Kyrgyzstan and 81.8% in Tajikistan.

Clueless Bastards!

A Google search of "к" give me only 2.45 Billion Web Pages. I would think that is just about all there are in Cyrillic let alone Russian. I mean come on, how many English pages do not contain the word And.

By contrast "大" gives me 8.25 Billion Google Results which would seem like a reasonable lower bound for the number of Chinese and Japanese Web Pages. As this is more than double the previous figure then one or other of these languages must surely have more pages than Russian.

Tried Bing in case it was something about Google.

That gave me 5.24 Million versus 114 Million. But oddly nearly all the Chinese character result were from Taiwan. So I guess Bing struggles to index Chinese.

Yahoo give 65.7 Million against 53 Million but again nearly all their results are from Taiwan. I guess that is because they share search with Microsoft.

The word "and" in Russian is "и" and comes in at "about 5,060,000,000 results" on Google.

I stand corrected, but it does seem that nobody really knows how many web pages are out there.

A couple of year ago the WWWF set out to find out but it doesn't seem that the available statistics are even close to being up to date let alone accurate.

I think Chinese is beating English now, with Spanish a distant third. Russian comes after several others.

Yes, if you only look at Internet Users.

What we are really talking about here is content which is different, but it is unlikely to be so different.

I seen some data earlier that suggests that the maximum blogging rate on a Chinese equivalent to Twitter actually has a record posting rate double the record for Twitter. Again, this is not the total number of Chinese Web Pages, but it does give an indication of how much material is being stored on Chinese Servers.

All the evidence points to the Americans being so far up their own arses that they really don't have a clue what is actually happening.

Re: Russian is now the second most used language on the web

the crappy side to this is that most of the Russian speaking countries are not allowed to apply for the Russian ccTLD in the fast track process even if they wanted to.

ccTLDs are rather limited by political structures and do not reflect cultural groupings.

This is one of many reasons why IDN gTLDs will blow them away.

yep, but sure looks like ICANN is playing politics as well when they should only be overlooking.
