But as the 2nd speaker point out (not sure who they are, sorry), is that these aren't "variants" as ICANN defines variants, these are "transliterations".

Yes, but the more the issue is raised the better.

We are not even at the opening ceremony yet!

GAC already have Verisign banged to rights.

Re: Remote Participant Nails It!

Listening to the cast in full, its amazing how nearly everyone is "bemused and confused", and this is just about TMCH really ....

Need to look at the lengthy schedule for this week, to see which session(s) the question (and answer?) might come up again.

Obviously a session that has a VeriSign spokesperson at it would seem to be essential ... anyone else will just give vague or non-answers.

Any IDN sessions where a VeriSign person will be speaking?

Re: Remote Participant Nails It!

There's great input by a guy called "Milton" (who is he, he sounds intelligent!) I think at around 52.45, basically saying that the TMCH is not going to solve all TM issues with new TLDs. He points out lawyers already have:

1) UDRP
2) Law courts

to deal with TM infringements. They don't need amazingly powerful new anti-cybersquatting mechanisms ... the mechanisms already exist!!

The sub-text being "get the f*** on with it", and stop trying to set up perfect TM protection policies that would take forever and a day to set up and still wouldn't work 100%.

Re: Remote Participant Nails It!

The session to target with those awkward questions about protection of the rights of existing registrants would be this one:

New gTLD Program Status Update

Date:
Mon, 08 April 2013 - 13:15 - 14:45

Excellent, I'll tune into that. Hope someone from VeriSign is speaking and gets asked something useful

It wasn't really the right place as ICANN have always been providing the right answers to the wrong questions, but similar questions have been asked during public consultation and are now being being picked up by various constituencies including the GAC, but the more public humiliation ICANN endure the less likely it is that Verisign are going to get off the hook.

"I haven't got the foggiest idea what you are talking about...." is not really an effective brush off now is it? But Yes, it was obviously pointless following through when you are dealing clueless jerks. Lets hope he tries again.

Applicant Guidebook 2.2.1.1 String Similarity Review
"Our current plans that we have communicated to our customers and
others is as follows:
Second level registrants for any .com or .net domain names will have the
right to activate their second-level name for any IDN versions of the
corresponding .com or .net name and no one else will be allowed to do that.
All second level registrations for IDN versions of .com or .net will be
associated with their corresponding ASCII .com or .net as applicable. In
essence, the result will be that all active second level domain names for
.com or .net (ASCII or IDN) will have the same registrant. For any that
are not activated, they will be unavailable to others. I don't think there
should be any user confusion in the DNS in this approach." Chuck Gomes,
