Spaces in Japanese

It would seem that Japanese Hirigana can be registered with or without spaces.

I have just registered ドメイン・ネーム.com but ドメインネーム.com was already gone!

Any ideas on whether spaces are likely to included or omitted as preference.

Best Regards

Re: Spaces in Japanese

That's not a space. That's an actual character. Think of it like a hyphen.

Re: Spaces in Japanese

Ok, but will Hirigana be used with or without these "hyphen characters".

Germans are big on hyphens, in US they almost Taboo. How will the Japanese register domains or type-in? This question is critical if you are investing in domains with more than one word.

Olney has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Re: Spaces in Japanese

That's the thing.
Japanese don't use those for spaces. There is a double byte space.
That ・ might be put in sometimes for emphasis but usually Japanese words just run on.
Since most words except for things in katakana or hiragana aren't that long it's easy to differientiate words without any space.

It sounds complicated at first from an English stand point but once you start learning Japanese or Chinese you see why a space isn't needed.

So that hyphen is sometimes used for emphasis in headers for example there are plenty other charaters in Japanese that are able to be used in IDNs even shapes, music notes etc.

For example
最近テレビ見てなかった。
One complete sentence.

Re: Spaces in Japanese

Thanks Olney, I think that answers my question. Those with the extra character are clearly a lot less valuable.

For Arabic Domains the situation is likely to be different and there spaces are allowed. The reason spaces are required in Arabic is that the last letter is written in an end form, which is quite distinct from a middle or initial form. If the space isn't there the character won't generate properly as the space and the keyboard generated character go together to generate a distinct Unicode character.

Re: Spaces in Japanese

I get the feeling that some people have inside access to a list of top terms in chinese overture and used a script to register them all -- I've found that alot of Chinese domains have been registered with the spaces that overture uses to seperate words.

That's an expensive mistake :P

Re: Spaces in Japanese

As far as I am aware, the registry just returns a value for availability not really whether it registered. Inadmissible name show up the same as already registered domains. As far as I am aware Chinese or Japanese Kanji is inadmissible with spaces. You can try this by putting two character string from unrelated domains in with a space between and searching. They always come up taken!
