Confiscating cryptocurrencies at any time? Exactly how would that work?

"Alt currencies, now cryptos." - WHAT ARE "ALT CURRENCIES?" Money backed by gold? Or do you mean alt-coins / alt-cryptocurrencies? ALT-Coins or ALT-cryptos, or ALT-Cryptocurrencies are any cryptocurrency that is not BITCOIN.

Alt currencies-I meant things like golden dinar or others with the same purpose-to undermine the current financial system and US hegemony.
As I said, I think the whole idea of digital currency is a sane and feasible one, but it's a long way to go and the form of it will change quite a few times.
So, as a means to speculate, I have nothing against it.
But this will not last in the current form and it is not going to replace the dollar any time soon.
Imho, of course.

The golden dinar... or you could talk about the Chinese gold-backed Yuan, and China's idea that they want to dump the "petrodollar" for the "petro yuan." (The US is losing the PETRODOLLAR right now!) Do you even know what the petrodollar is?!

How about the deal between Russia and China to buy and sell oil, not using the US Dollar? (Something called the "holy-grail gas deal.")

There's this thing going around the world right now called "de-dollarization."

To a large degree, the undermining of the current financial system and the US Dollar is due to secretly (in plain sight) transforming US Currency from one based on gold and silver backing, to one based on ever-expanding debt issuance.

When President Richard Nixon took the United States' currency (and the world) off the gold standard, in 1971, that was one of the last biggest steps that would lead to the fall of the dollar. And while the US dollar may still be around for years, a lot of it's current value is likely to be lost.

Do you know what "quantitative easing" is? The printing of TRILLIONS of dollars, out of thin air, without the backing of gold, silver or anything of value?

The main thing is, TRUST is being lost in the US Dollar.

AND, how much longer do you think the US Dollar will have the status as world reserve currency?

Oh, so you trust the mighty ruble more?

You know, I see there are many people with the same world views;
They are really a diverse folk ranging from isis and blacklivesmatter to people who just lost a job and don't have savings.
In short, disgruntled people, whether by life or by psychological constitution.
They think, better an end with pain than pain without end....
Be real... And don't bet your farm , that's all!

First of all, your comment "Oh, so you trust the mighty ruble more?" ... It really must have taken some convoluted thinking to come up with that.

What I have trusted for many years is gold, silver and real estate. In the past 8 or 9 months, I've included cryptocurrency.

I was ignorant for way too long!

And, BTW, I wish I had bet the farm on Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum and other alt-cryptos last year.

But there are many people I know who have "bet" (or invested) something in cryptocurrencies and have been able to pay off their debts, and made significant profits.

For anyone who doesn't understand blockchain and cryptocurrencies, I'd strongly recommend watching videos on Youtube. There are many videos talking about blockchain and all of the different cryptocurrencies and how they are used in various peer-to-peer applications for trading, buying, payments, gaming, etc.

Some people have compared investing in cryptos now, to investing in Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, etc., in their initial stages.

Re: Please do *not* spread this video

Random thoughts and predictions:

The US government won't crack down on bitcoin (and other cryptos), as long as they can control the chokeholds: the exchanges where bitcoins are traded for dollars. The US isn't (as far as I can tell) worried that bitcoin will supplant the dollar; they just want to make sure that bitcoin doesn't become a new way to launder dirty money. As long as all bitcoin/dollar exchanges follow existing anti-money-laundering regulations (including "know your customer"), there will be no crackdown. (If bitcoin/crypto ever became a serious threat to the dollar, the story might change, but that would be far in the future).

The dollar will not lose its status as a reserve currency any time soon. The Euro has faded, and China has not deregulated the RMB to the point where it is usable as a reserve currency. And bitcoin/crypto is not in the picture, at least not yet.

The dollar is not about to collapse. When the US Federal Reserve instituted Quantitative Easing in 2008/2009, some prophets of doom predicted imminent hyperinflation and the dollar's collapse. They predicted the same thing in 2010, 2011, etc. Still hasn't happened. Before I start taking their predictions for 2018 seriously, I would need them to explain why they were wrong so many times before, and why this time they are right.

Buying bitcoin in 2011 was like buying Microsoft in 1984, but better. Buying bitcoin in late 2017 feels a lot like buying Microsoft (or pet.com) in late 1999.

Interesting chart. (I've seen that one before)

And, if that applies to stocks and cryptocurrencies, I'd say that cryptocurrencies are in the "Awareness Phase," and just beginning to get "Media Attention." On the other hand, I'd say the stock markets are somewhere past Greed and Delusion.

IMO, the movement of money into cryptos is a megatrend and not a fad or a short term bubble.

Domains are legal, while the status of cryptocurrency is not clear. In ancient times, anyone who tries to print his own currency will probably be sent to the gallows.

Disclaimer: I'm not discouraging a punt on altcoin but to compare domains with cryptocurrency is not appropriate.

Cryptos collapsing is within expectation, but what is unexpected is that it brought down the Dow along with it. So it would appear that some of the big boys have lost quite a bit in bitcoin, probably using borrowed funds.
