"In fact, removing the pain point of having to use ASCII is a relief for average Chinese which we non-Chinese have difficulty in comprehending".

this is encouraging news but i hope this doesn't end like the .рф launch where there was a lot of hype and then years later nothing seems to have happened. time will tell.

Not so sure you are correct. A respected member of this forum told me recently that 30+ % of outdoor advertising in Russia now is рф

Re: Chinese .IDNgtld's off to a good start

The numbers provided by TLD Registry were inflated due to a miscommunication with the technical registry. I'll post updated numbers soon. They are likely to still be the best day 1 launch, but not #1 and #4 overall.

I do see some .рф domains in the SERPS from time to time there are active websites and businesses using them, so far a minority but frequent enough to get noticed.

About 19,900,000 results for sites that end in .рф. Considerably more than when I searched say a year ago.

Trending upwards:

Re: Chinese .IDNgtld's off to a good start

The best .сайт and .онлайн domains are blocked by the "collision" list.

.рф didn't have to worry about that.

Re: Chinese .IDNgtld's off to a good start

On a side note, I posted the following to my blog account at circleid.com last week, but it never made it past moderation - it was deleted without notification, and when I asked circleid why, they never bothered replying. It appears that since circleid accepts paid editorial from PIR, that they've allowed themselves to be captured by industry insiders...

Quote:

PIR LOSES IT'S IDN PRINCIPLES DOWN THE BACK OF THE SOFA.

In 2006, the Public Interest Registry was flying the flag of equity and stability when it published "Principles for the Foundation of Top Level IDNs".

http://www.icann.org/en/resources/id...23jun06-en.pdf

Here are some quotable quotes:

"Retention of public trust—The public trust earned by existing domains must not be betrayed, or trust in the Domain Name System (DNS) itself may be eroded"

"Ensure equity and parity for Registries and Registrars—Contributors to public trust in the domain space must not be disenfranchised"

"Maintain consistency with proven Internet principles--.RFCs 2825 and 2826 urge single maintainers for symbols with common meaning"

"Stewards of the technical administration of the Internet are committed to act in the best interests of the public (current and future domain name registrants and Internet users)"

"If the implementation of IDNs is managed in such a way as to result in brand fragmentation, this will inevitably diminish the public trust of all gTLDs and ccTLDs. We believe that this factor must be considered in order to avoid exposing registrants to the dangers flowing from a devaluation of the trust that has been built up in the DNS and the global single-root system."

"One of the significant challenges of implementing IDNs is to avoid fragmenting the Internet and isolating users."

Fast forward to 2014 and the Public Interest Registry appears to have lost the IDN principles down the back of the sofa.

PIR is standing by to launch .org equivalents in a number of languages. PIR's existing IDN.org registrants, who had a very reasonable expectation that PIR would be guided by the IDN principles it published back in 2006, are shocked to here that PIR is ignoring their registrations completely, and not transferring them across to the new IDN GTLD's it won on the basis of it's argument that .org = .संगठन = .орг = .机构

PIR is allowing registrars to accepts pre-registrations from all-comers for cyrillic domain names in .орг where there are matching cyrillic domain names in .org, thereby allowing [cyrillic].org and [cyrillic].орг to have different registrants.

Fragmentation. Loss of public trust. Erosion of trust in the DNS. Disenfranchisement. Shame on you, PIR!

Existing registrants of idn.org domains have no power to stop this - there's a registrar wall between the registrants and the registry, with nicely worded contracts to ensure they have no power.

They've paid their ICANN domain tax on these domains for years. Will ICANN help PIR pull their IDN principles out of the back of the sofa before these names are delegated to other parties, or is that domain tax just more taxation without representation?
Anyone who wants to use the above, or a version of it, to get it a public airing is most welcome to do so. I'm getting sick of censorship within the domain community.
