So what's the story?

Really quiet on the forums these days. Is everyone just waiting it out or given up? Seems like the latter, unfortunatley. Idntools.com seems to be offline as well. Traffic is way down too....

think most folks are waiting. Why would one give up before even the translits are out? (after so many years)

Idntools got hacked i think.

Not sure if "given up" is how I'd describe it. "Drastically reduced my expectations" is probably the words I'd use.

Re: So what's the story?

Does anyone know more about the schedule here? Is it accurate?

It lists 2015 as the launch date for the translits. I don't understand why they are delaying the launch as the have been planned for much longer than the stupid new gTLDs. What is also interesting is that they list a new russian gTLD (.рус) What are your thoughts on it?

Launch Date is irrelevant.
It is all about contracting.

I noticed the same thing. Not huge amounts but it beats my english .com's. Traffic to idn.com is beating english.com as well.

Indeed. The high revenue we got from PC was only a marketing stunt to launch the project. I am back at ND and satisfied!

Really? I had been seeing pretty great payouts for about the past 1.5 years. Only the past couple of months have been down.

Re: So what's the story?

An interesting parallel was highlighted by Stuart Lawley from ICM Registry, operator of .XXX, and the original grandfathering plans for their other new adult gTLDs.

Lawley said: "This is exactly what Versign had planned for their IDN .com equivalents,
but which isn’t something they are currently able to offer either.

Unfortunately, post submission of our application, ICANN amended and
documented detailed rules about Sunrise and launch processes which
contained restrictions and prohibitions on “earmarking” names. These new
rules applied to all new gTLDs, including us and Verisign as well.

We submitted our Launch Plan for approval to ICANN but approval wasn’t
given, citing the ICANN mandated launch rules and also citing security and
stability concerns.

We also learned that registrars were not able to implement the “reserve
now, register later” plan and so we are unable to offer our original
grandfathering plan both from ICANN¹s policy perspective and from a
registrar implementation perspective.

We have therefore amended our launch plans to comply exactly with those
permitted by ICANN and that includes an exclusive 30 day period April
15-May 15, post Sunrise, but pre-General Availablity that allows .XXX
holders of record as of 31st March 2015 to participate in our Limited
Registration period, which we refer to as our Domain Matching Program. The
Domain Matching Program will allow .XXX stakeholders to register any
available directly matching second level name in .PORN or .ADULT, before
those names are offered to the general public."

So bottom line, this is what we can expect:

- there is no formal aliasing
- TM holders grab theirs first
- the current .com holders then grab theirs
- then general availability

So this will all come down to how much the TMs have been gamed.
And whether you can afford to buy all your idns again on day 1, else they will be available to anyone in general availability.

Well, I have to say, I do not really buy this guy. He has copped out and he is trying to compare himself to Verisign in order to look better.

Firstly, Verisign are still negotiating and are not even at the public argument stage, so I guess they still see a way forward.

Second most of his argument appears to be with the Registrars, who cannot do what he wanted or at least will not do it for him. If Registrars were an insurmountable problem I guess Verisign would not still be pushing with ICANN.

i don't think this would necessarily mean that but worst case would be:

-we have to pay twice the renewal fees for our IDNs or drop/ not register one alias.

- top generic aliases have no real protection

sounds like a nightmare but i think there is no evidence that this will happen even when there is no aliasing.

it would be very bad for languages where one IDN alias is badly needed: such as Russian or Arabic.

also even if we can register aliases it makes the situation far more complicated: keep the alias and drop .com or keep both? Then the market is flooded with many other extensions and we have ccTLDs which DON'T have aliasing either. Where does one place the bets now?

In Russian we have:

.рус
.su
.ком
.com
.рф

for Chinese there is:

.cn,
.中国
.com.cn
.公司
.点看
.com

In Japanese we have:

.日本
.jp
.コム
.com

Hindi:

.भारत
.com
.कॉम

I certainly wouldn't register all versions even if i could!

Then we have low quality crap gTLD IDNs being thrown away diluting the market and confusing everyone.

In my opinion all this would not have happened or at least not to this extent if the silly .whatever would not have been approved. They are going under and dragging all the better extensions down.
